Don't know why anybody is shocked let alone surprised by this. Saw this coming for at least a month.

Wow. This sucks. I was rooting for his return.
All I can say is good luck, Chance! And RTB Beavs.

Well, he was either seriously injured and thinks his better days are behind him, or maybe he threw a fit about being benched and basically has been quietly suspended…both are extreme possibilities, the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. Maybe with 1 season of eligibility left he wants a lock on a starting job somewhere.
I wasn’t expecting this. It’s going to be interesting to see where he goes, and if OSU gets into the transfer market. I wish him success next year, except any game he plays against us, if that should happen.

Chance was under center for our wins over Boise and Fresno as well USC and UU last year. I thank him for that and wish him well and good luck in finding whatever it is he's looking for.

Maybe Nolan was hurt worse than we thought. He may also figured out that BG was going to be the guy going forward and that it would take a lot to win the job back with Chiles coming in and BG having some traction as far as being the QB1. The QB room has several guys in it that were on the team this year. BG was not a great qb but he did the best he could being thrust into the role after CN's injury. Unless Niner or CN gives an interview discussing all the details, we will never know. I say thanks Chance. You were a good Beaver and I wish you the best in your future endeavors. Next man up and GO BEAVS!!

Good luck, Chance! Thanks for giving it your all.
A couple thoughts that come to mind:
1) I can't help but wonder if Smith is one of those who doesn't believe in the unspoken rule that a player shouldn't lose a starting job because of injury. First Gebbia, now Nolan. Not making a judgement either way, just curious to get a peek inside Smitty's head because all we hear from him on stuff like this is coach-speak. Pretty much every Beaver fan was thinking the same thing when Chance got injured: Well, at least we can see what Gulbranson can do now. Smith would be dumb to not think the same thing, and I'm not surprised if this was treated as a tryout, and Ben won out after winning his first 3 games as a starter.
2) In the words of Senator Palpatine, I will watch Chance's career with great interest. The only successful QB we've had under Smith is Luton, and that was as a senior after he gained a ton of experience before Smith arrived. No other QB has developed particularly well. I consider Smith to have rock-solid credentials here after coaching Jake Browning at UW, not to mention some of the QB's at Boise State, but I wonder about Lindgren. If Chance goes elsewhere and lights it up, I think we need to take a serious look at the QB development (or lack thereof) under Lindgren. It's now the only really glaring weakness in this program, even 5 years in.
With that said, if I had to guess, I'd say that he'll probably end up in a non-P5 conference.

It could be as simple as he was going to have to beat out both Gulbranson and Chiles to regain his starting spot and didn't want to deal with a three-player QB competition especially after winning the job in the last offseason. I guess where he lands could shed some light on it. If he just wants to start and he's healthy, there are plenty of "lower level" schools that would probably love to have him as the starter.

If what you say is true then my response is bye, bye don't let the door hit you in the arse. I want a guy that wants to fight for his job.

He had a severe concussion, and was not cleared to play. End of story for this season.
Going forward, he's not our guy and wasn't going to be our guy. Not sure that BG is either, but Nolan definitely wasn't.
Thanks for your work at OSU, good luck in the future. Where he ends up will tell us a lot about how highly he's thought of.

But I think he might see it as a vote of no confidence from the coaches and that they don't see him as the clear-cut starter. He probably isn't afraid of the competition. It would be the principle of the situation to him. But obviously I have no way to get into his brain and see his true feelings.

He beat the ducks with a quarterback sneak, that’s good enough for me. Good luck and good health to him

It would be smart to bring in a transfer grad senior next year and let BG and Chiles develop some more.

That sucks. I was hoping he could come back healthy and thought he might be the leader in the locker room to start next year. If he could just clean up the TOs, he was the more dynamic quarterback. Our offense was better with him, despite the squinting and happy feet in the pocket. He could sling the ball, just needed to be more consistent.
I think they definitely have to hit the transfer portal now. Chiles may be the future, but throwing him to the wolves next year wouldn't be the best idea. If he could get a year under his belt watching a seasoned transfer QB he can hit the ground running in 2024.
