Playing time in the Iowa game. Can someone explain Scott's thinking? Pretty simple. Scott didn’t trust the young guards to correctly run the defensive scheme against probably a top 5 national offense. In general Freshman = Terrible defenders. Even if the Frosh push your offense to something like 1.12 points per possession, it doesn’t matter if you start giving up 1.7 points per possession.

They will get there, but they aren’t ready yet.

Syd started. Deven started. Sometimes when you throw a newbie in the deep end, they learn to swim faster out of necessity. It would have been nice to see Lily get some advice on the sideline, then put back in to see if corrections had been made later in the game. We need her corner three's to diversify our offense and pull some defenders off of our other shooters.

I know coaches sometimes make bad decisions, but he’s seen these players every day in practice, and he’s playing who he thinks gives him the best chance to win. Lily and hopefully Adlee will be good players, it will just take some time. PS FTD!!!

Lily is a flat out bucket from 3 with the smallest of windows. 0 players shooting 30% from 3 but 1 and she is almost 40%. A good defense can cover up 1 girl. Need her stretching the floor.

Want to see Martha get minutes at the point. We need a floor general to run an offense. Don't want to see the 4-5 double screen at top of the key repeated multiple times down the floor. Got to be a little less predictable.

Athleticism and quickness are the tools needed to play good defense.
Attitude and effort are the other requisites.
The fundamentals should be coached in high school.
If that is missing and you can't situationally play a freshman, why did you recruit her in the first place?

This is preseason. These posts talk about the speed of PAC 12 play. Do you think practice is at that speed? Our getting to the tournament is through the PAC 12 schedule, not these games. Use these games to expose these kids to the next level. One is not taught in high school the fundamentals at this level. They have all played some sort of AAU stuff, but how much of that is team oriented? Going only 7 deep in a preseason game against Iowa made no sense. No one is being taught anything. That includes the coaches who aren't seeing the mistakes being made that can be corrected. I too believe the control style of Coach is too tight. To me that is why the ball stops. Afraid to make mistakes and thinking what coach said, instead of going with the basketball play and the flow of the game. The flow comes on the floor not from instructions from the sideline on every position.

I have always been a fan of Scott's but I sure am scratching my head on what he is doing. The freshman need to be playing and gaining experience. I don't think a screen was set the whole night. If I was Talia I would have some serious doubts about this. I don't see how Malovic (sp) starts over Beers and how Noel is getting 31 minutes a game while the Freshman sit. This is frustrating for me to watch I can imagine it is for our players.

I was complaining to myself when Noelle was playing thinking those frosh need playing time, but then she was about the only one scoring during the last of the 3rd and early 4th quarters. I remember thinking: Gee, what am I complaining about? She's scoring points when everyone else is missing layups and every other shot.
Really, it was a weird game. Coach R has got to see the "tightness" and inability to make shots. Hope he can adjust.

While I agree with many of you, the coaches also have to give time to the players they expect to play the important minutes together as the season goes along. We should expect 30+ minutes for Talia and Bendu for this team to be successful. We should also expect 25-32 minutes from Raegan and AJ, and close to that from Jelena. If/when Timea returns she will demand minutes as well. There just won't be a lot of minutes for most of the freshman as the season goes along. Expect them to play in the next two games, and in a couple other non-conference games. They will have their shot at earning playing time. The reality is though, they will most likely not get a ton of minutes once Pac12 play is under way. I'd love for them to earn that playing time but it's also important to get those you are going war with minutes playing together. This team only has 4 returning players.
