Only 3 days until the Iowa game on the 25th....
I haven't seen Iowa play this year so have no real basis to assess them, except that they are good team that has one of the best players in the country on their roster....
Like several people on this board, I have somewhat of a trained eye when it comes to basketball. Not a pro, or anything like that. But here are my amateur observations.
Thus far into the season, the Beavs have shown very little to impress. They have one premiere players in Talia, and one impressive Rookie in Raegen...
Jelena has shown mild improvement - but not nearly what most of us were hoping for. Same is true for AJ.... None of the newcomers have shown anything that makes someone think "There's a star in the making." None.
I'm a believer in Coach Rueck - and I hope he shocks the hell out of Iowa on Friday. But right now, I just don't see it....
I hope some of you out there have a more upbeat assessment of this year's team - but right now, I don't see the ingredients for a good team... Not enough good players. Not enough team speed. Not enough perimeter shooters....
Show me it ain't so Coach....🏀 GO BEAVS!!

Bendu needs to be added to your assessment as she's a huge change to the team make up. Other than that, you're probably pretty close. They could still really surprise us.

Besides that: - Lily Hansford has impressed me and I consider her a potential “star in the making”. - AJ Marotte has shown more than a little improvement. I really like the team we can field now and, though it is late in coming together (with Bendu’s addition), I think we can create problems for Iowa.

OSU WBB Team's results this weekend will tell us a great deal about our team's current state, and give us a view into the potential of each player and team.

Jelena is who she is, being in better shape does not make her quicker, just able to play longer. She has her strengths and weaknesses - but dramatic improvement in her game would require changing her quickness. Ruth and Marie had much quicker feet, and this had more upside. Regardless, Jelena offers a lot this team. Beers is what I think many of us expected - physically able for her game to directly translate. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Lily - she’s the shooter we expected, but more physically ready than I expected anyway. She may not be a star, but she can be a very solid Pac-12 player. I did not expect much from Adlee this year. I thought she’d shoot better, but I thought she’d have a thought time with adapting to the college game and still building back from a bad injury. I think she will progress into a solid Pac-12 player. Aaron is the only one that is under-performing from what I expected, but not by a lot. She’s a journeyman for a reason, but will help this team. Gardiner was the one I was really excited about, and probably true for all of us. So not seeing her on the court gives me Andrea-PTSD. I think we’d all feel real good about this year if she was adding 18/10 every night so far, which is what I think she’ll do.

Re: A.J. - you're off base: "Jelena has shown mild improvement - but not nearly what most of us were hoping for. Same is true for AJ...." By stating "SAME"....that reads as: A.J. "mild improvement"...."not nearly what most of us were hoping for". I'll take the .460 FG% (significant improvement from last season's .371) and the 15 ppg. Ability to hit mid-range...and some very nice 'floaters'. Good defense too. What were you (or as per your characterization - "...most of us...") expecting? That being said, it's too early to judge what any Beaver WBB player will bring to the floor in 2022-23. True test comes very soon.

In the 4 games thus far, our 3 point shooting percentages have been 35.3, 10.0, 14.3, and 30.3. I don't see us staying with Iowa or Connecticut unless those numbers this week start with a 4.

My feeling is that making any statement about how the Beav's season is going to go before Gardiner plays is a waste of time. In general Gardiner is rated one of the top 10 Freshmen this year in every list I've seen talking about this. Specifically the team needs another rebounder, as none of the other players were recruited with rebounding in mind except for Mit and Beers. The rest of the team seems to be working at it, but you don't learn rebounding in a weekend.
Lex- I've seen improvement from her in each game. There was a lot of rust there but she seems to be shaking it off.
Bendu- Seems tailor made to make Clark hate OSU.
Talia- Really need her to break out of her 3 pt shooting slump.
Iowa gets half their scoring from Clark and Czinano which is OSU's defensive strength. Because of this I think the biggest question is whether the Beav's offense can have a go for the game.

Not enough good players. Not enough team speed. Not enough perimeter shooters.... Show me it ain't so Coach.... 🏀GO BEAVS!! First, I don't disagree with you on where the Beavs are at right now, and concerning this upcoming weekend. There is a lot of needed growth to match up against really good teams. In saying that though, here's my take on where the Beavs are at compared to last year: Talia is better than Talia last year, more seasoned, more of a leader, ready to take over if others aren't performing yet willing to let others do their thing if they are producing. Bendu is/will be better than Codding. Bendu has better speed, is a better ball handler, has started 4 seasons at the Power 5 level, 2 years in the Pac12, and has started in the final four. She has a nice mid-range jumper although never a highly proficient shooter, plays great D, and brings a great attitude to the team. AJ is better than Greta last season. She's aggressive offensively, although that hasn't always been a positive. The Beavs need scorers and she is helping in that department. Where I think, and hope, we see development in her game is rebounding. She's averaging over 7rpg so far, and if she can average 6ish through Pac12 play, that will be a big asset for the Beavs. Raegan is better than Kennedy last year. I always liked Kennedy and thought she had a lot of promise, but I would take the current Raegan over last season's Kennedy. Not sure if Raegan is the defensive player Kennedy was, but her overall game gives her the advantage. Jelena is better than last year's Jelena. One thing I've noticed the most is the passing game and Jelena seeming comfortable with her teammates. We haven't seen Timea yet, but I'm hopeful she gives us a season that compares to Taya, but we won't know that for a while. I'll take Noelle this year over Noelle last year. I will give bench strength of Ellie and Tea the edge over Shalexxus, Lily, and Adlee, but even is saying that, I think Shalexxus could get her 3pt shooting game back, and I do like what I've seen from her ability to be in the right place and make the right pass. Lily has impressed me. She's a smart basketball player that I do think has a shot at being very 'Kat" like. Lily makes the right plays, shows obvious signs of being able to hit the 3, and I've noticed some good rebounding position. The problem is, she doesn't have the strength yet to maintain that position. I'm really looking forward to how her career progresses. So, with that said, I'm giving this team better marks than last year's team. To me, that gives this team a shot at being in the NIT, or even the NCAA tourney. I really think it's a matter of how quickly they develop and learn to play as a team. Too many losses in the early going could really hurt those chances. I originally thought this could be a team much like 2012-2013, that improved greatly in 2013/2014. That may still be the case, but I think this team should finish better than the 2012/2013 team. It may come down to how good Timea is and how quickly the young players can adapt to Pac12 ball. I really think next year could be excellent.

I suggest we wait a bit before drawing any sweeping conclusions about how good this team is. They've only played a small handful of games together and it's obvious they've yet to gel. That's what these early games are for, and not to draw season-long assessments.

As good as Raegan and AJ have been to this point, they will be even better as Bendu ramps up. Talia is also going to be magnified by the addition. The speed will increase which will increase ball movement and space. Then Lily will step in to knock down some spot up threes and grab a few boards. Lex needs to work on speed and understanding of the offensive actions.
To stay in the game with Iowa we'll need to play fast, hit threes, keep Jelena and Raegan out of foul trouble, and Bendu and AJ need to put the handcuffs on Clark.

That's what these early games are for, and not to draw season-long assessments. I definitely agree with you. I could see this team go either way. There are only 4 returning players, 1ish starter. They haven't had time to play a lot together, to get to know each other's game, and in most instances get to know Coach Rueck's plays, and style of play. I could see this team really struggling and losing a lot of games. An injury could be devastating. I could also see them grow together throughout the year and be a very solid team by the end of the year. I don't know which will happen but it's fun to talk about and speculate. My hope is for the latter, but 4 games against fairly inferior teams probably hasn't shown us enough to get a good handle on how this season will go.

Whatever the outcome may be on Friday, I'm glad that we have some strong competition before conference play (Iowa, LSU, Duke or UConn). We've had some non-conference schedules in the past that have been extremely soft.
