My guess is that some Longhorn fan had a hack to bypass the the captcha (click on the hanging plant) and the cookie preventing more than one vote per day and the new math problem cannot be bypassed.
this is why they had a huge spike in votes and then when the math problem was added, their voting slowed way down.
