I specifically wrote "scene." A small part of a movie. Not the entire movie. There is no one scene in "The Natural," a movie I love for numerous reasons, that is as good as the four minutes of James Earl Jones in FOD. The best scenes in "The Natural" are when Roy strikes out the Whammer; when he steps into the cage the first time for BP, and when he gets out of the hospital, goes over to the locker room at the stadium and tells a shaving Pop that he's good to go. And the cinematography in "The Natural" is brilliant, the way Caleb Deschanel uses the various shades of light in each scene, such as in Iris Gaines' hat when she stands up and there is a glow around her head like the famous Madonna painting, or when Hobbs opens up the case holding Wonderboy and a light shines off it, like the sword of Excalibur. If I didn't have to hear or look at Timothy Busfield during Jones giving his speech............maybe. Agree to disagree, I suppose. A fun fact is that Busfield was a minor league pitcher. But I still hate Mark in Field of Dreams.

If you hated him, then he did a great job of acting.
He's also very good in the West Wing.
I think Eight Men Out is the best baseball movie. DB Sweeney as Jackson and Jon Cusack as Buck Weaver are outstanding. And Charlie Sheen as Happy Felsch is a better acting job than Charlie Sheen as Ricky Vaughn. Don Harvey as Swede Risberg is perfect ("The Swede was a hard guy.")
The only guy miscast in EMO is Gordon Clapp, as Ray Schalk, no way is that guy a catcher.

Seen a couple clips while channel surfing a few times, and quickly moved on as I promised myself that I would watch it someday. I might. But honestly, I find most heart-felt movies that are big hits have no appeal to me.

Sure, the payoff at the end could be described as "heart-felt", but I'd just say it's a well-made movie and kind of a super-natural mystery that's fun to ride to the end. That it revolves around baseball, which I am a big fan of, makes it up my alley as well. I wouldn't say it's any more sappy or heart felt than "The Sandlot".

More. *Unpopular Opinion Alert* The Sandlot was trash. *Unpopular Opinion Alert* The Sandlot suffers from too many child actors. Most movies with more than two are just dreadful. Also, it seems like the movie is stupid dated at this point what with the child drug use, children left alone to play with fire, forced sexual advances by males upon females, predatory actions being rewarded rather than punished, etc. I remember it being very cringy even by early 90s standards, and it seems to be worse each time some moron puts it on. I never liked that movie. "Field of Dreams" has two just awful characters that annoy me so much that I fast forward through them, when I watch the movie. But the whole movie is so much more well-crafted than "The Sandlot" with a much better plot and fewer just awful negatives.

The Sandlot is good for what it is: A nostalgia-fueled movie for adults who can relate to the kids in that movie, and also for young kids. It's certainly kind of schlocky. It has its share of cringe moments as well - then again, so do a lot of movies that have loads of kid actors - such as the Bad News Bears, which I also happen to like watching despite its cringe-worthy moments. If you don't go into it expecting any oscar-worthy performances/plot/screenwriting, it can be an enjoyable ride. That said, I think the Oscar-winning film "Forrest Gump" is a cringe-filled schlock-fest that serves as nothing more than "fan-service" to baby boomers wanting to re-live their childhoods. It's the movie equivalent to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire". I typically like Robert Zemeckis films and Billy Joel songs, but I despise those two pieces of work. It's all just opinion. So, everybody is right.
