Is it so bad to be in the Have Nots division? Maybe that's a good thing that can retain an actual element of college football/amateur sports as opposed to what the SEC and BIG are creating...which is Minor League NFL.
Clearly the SEC and BIG are driving the bus and will dictate how the upper division plays out. But they are going to be dealing with all the headaches of NIL and perhaps actual player payroll when it comes to billion dollar TV contracts. Something OSU was never going to compete with. And the lower tier legacy programs they are dragging with them...Indiana, Vandy, Rutgers, Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, South Carolina...I dont know that Id want to be in their shoes when this all shakes out.
I imagine there will be a healthy dose of TV money left to throw at the other 80 or so schools that get left out...and quite frankly it will be a more competitive brand nationwide.
Tier 1 is still going to be the same 4 to 8 schools always competing for the championship. That won't be Oregon or Washington or UCLA or Stanford..or at best rarely. They will simply be the bitches of the uuber programs like Ohio State and Bama
But OSU in the lower Division absolutely will be able to compete for the National Championship.
I don't know that this is the end game for college football. But if it is, I look forward to it. I'll miss the Pac 12 and regional rivalries. But the writing has been on the wall for a while.

The split into the have and have nots occured years ago. Liken it to the have and have nots in high school sports and how the levels are split. Maybe it is time to make it official and have two level of national championship playoffs. Sad that we will never make the Rose bowl now.

My preference is accept reality and make a love as fast as possible. Even if we were on the have league we can’t actually compete. Create a winning tradition in the lower tier thats fun for fans.

The remnants of the Pac 12, ACC, Big 12, and G5 conferences should just acknowledge now what's happening and take a leadership role in dictating what that next paradigm will be. Organize a true alliance with what is clear which schools will be left behind. Pull out of the FBS now and and get a leg up on creating this new format...the scheduling and playoff format, some uniformity in league rules, and negotiating a lucrative TV contract.

Be hilarious if the remnants got their act together and made a collective bargaining agreement for body bag games with the big boys. Want a game with a lower tier program? Give us 2 million per game asshats.

The odds are long that the 90 non-SEC & B1G teams can quickly come together, but it would be epic if they did. Put together some rules, scheduling plans and a true champion. Within a decade, half of the Big32 would want out.

Obviously there will be way more money, but your "educational institution" has completely whored itself out for football. Does that really fit the Stanford or Cal mission? Whoregon of course...so it will be awesome to see them continue to be an also ran when only up against the big boys.

What the OP said is why I said football was way harder to win a championship in than baseball, in that thread.......with the NIL crap, and the recent re-alignments, we are squarely in the "have nots" category.
It is what it is. I'll still watch Beaver sports, and I hope we can compete in the "lower tier" but my interest in college sports took a hit for sure.

I think winning a championship is cool but overall that kind of goal cheapens the entire experience. I’m excited for lower stakes and good times.

This might be the most Beaver fan post ever....haha Totally. It’s a pointless goal for us in basketball and football. We can probably keep trying 100 more years and be 0-100 with 50 more losing seasons per sport. I’m not so interested in that lol

When you think about it, college baseball illustrates what is possible in amateur college athletics when the corrupting influence of money and TV is taken off the table. 200+ programs, and anybody can win it all any year. Obviously we're a great example, but I also look at Fresno State taking home the hardware that one year. No way that happens in any big money sport.
If getting off the money treadmill might mean getting closer to that ideal, I'd be all for it. It's just doubtful whether getting off that treadmill (and more importantly, convincing 90+ other programs to do the same) is even possible...
