There has been some speculation that USC may tap professional baseball for their next coach. Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon State have chosen that path aand with relative success in each case. Chip Hale inherited a depleted roster at transfer-riddled Arizona, Willie Bloomquist wlked into a dumpster fire at ASU and Mitch Canham has carried the torch following coaching legend, Pat Casey.
No word on what the Huskies are thinking in replacing the retiring Lindsey Meggs.

The problem for Southern Cal baseball is John Savage across town at UCLA. Since he showed up in 2005 they haven't done squat.(It took Savage 3 or 4 years to get going though)
They made the tournament in 2005 & 2015, which is horrible with their history.
This is a text book example of why you never want your rival to "get good."

I don't like the idea of going up against Andrew Checketts every year, but, yes, that is something that I would do, if I were them. Checketts seems very happy in Santa Barbara, though. It would personally take a ton of money for me to want to move from Santa Barbara to South Central, though. If you are going to play ball somewhere, there are a bunch of places in Southern California I would rather play than South Central, especially with how much it costs to go to USC and with limited baseball scholarships.

Gill was brought in from a smaller Cali school with a great resume (to some) and was a train wreck. With FSU now looking I think there is 27 (or more) schools looking SC is in need of a younger coach who is a teacher and knows how to deal with the younger generation. My SC friends/classmates are hoping SC can lure Orloff from his alma mater at UCI. The guy is baseball through and through. young, and great teacher, and has pretty good results since taking over at UCI in '18. The question is if the slide this year to a Big West 6th place is going to keep him from consideration.
Most think it'll be typical SC and they will go for a "homerun" name vs younger guy to bring longterm stability/success. Either way, SC and UW getting high quality coaches is both good and bad!

There were lots of indications that Checketts said not just “no” but “hell no” the last time the USC job opened.

Checketts also turned down the uo job. He and his family are very happy in Santa Barbara. He doesn’t have to travel far to recruit so he can stay close to home with his family.

Interesting. Maybe now they go after Mark McGwire. He could add some juice to their program.

This type of thing happened in the last USC search as well. Good candidates just said no.

Huge difference between tapping Canham (who was a minor league manager from 2016 until June 2019), and Bloomquist who, when it comes to head coaching, had a complete lack of experience. Equivalancies between them are bogus. On the subject of Bloomquist. Is ASU "relative success" defined as [ 2021 - before Willie] : 33-22 overall / 16-14 in Conference >>>>> >>>>>>>>>>> [ 2022 - with Willie] : 26-32 overall / 13-17 in Conference.? wtf?

Tulo was probably going to take it but then he had to go on the DL.
Sorry, bad memories from a Rockies fan. Dude was always hurt.
