Well there was that SD fan behind their bench just destroying Vanderbilt. Some of it was pretty cringe worthy. That guy was angry at the world. I thought the umpiring was tight on the corners but overwhelmingly correct at least on the outside corner. Actually, amazingly so. The angry guy didn’t like umpires in particular.

I sat above the Vandy dugout for both games against the Beavs. Those kids were class. Sure, they got excited when their team scored, or when their defense made a great play, but it was all amongst themselves. At no point did I feel like they were being chippy, as in a David Esquer coached team kind of chippy. Yes, Corbin is a good dude and I think his team reflects that. At first, I thought their antics in right field were kind of hokey, but then I thought it was kinda cool and entertaining. Team stretching, light calisthenics, whatever, all good comradery stuff. That didn’t bother me at all. The only thing that did bother me was their bats, the little rocket in center field, and of course the scary guy in right field. Speaking of the scary guy in right field, after Hjerpe's final out, the Vandyboyz were just wandering around in the dugout with that understandably, just-lost shock on their faces while the Beavs were huggin’ and high fivin’ on the infield. When the Beavs were just starting to calm down and retreat to their dugout, scary guy Jones walks out of Vandy’s dugout by himself and starts walking towards home plate and the Beavs dugout. He turns towards his teammates and motions for all of them to come along. The rest of the Vandy team follows Jones’ lead and that’s when a few Beavs took notice, that all the Vandyboyz wanted to shake hands. Very classy gesture! As the handshakes were wrapping up, A man and woman decked out in Vandygear came down from the stands and sat down in the first row. I casually congratulated them on a well fought regional, a helluva team they have, thanks for coming, and mentioned that they have a very classy team that mirrors their coach. They mentioned what a great time they had here at the regional, loved the stadium, the crowds, how nice everyone has been, and the whole experience. I then asked them if they had a son playing and mom replied, “Yes, the right fielder Spencer Jones.” I said, “Whoa, that’s some kind of ball player you two have.” Mom says, “Thank you.” I said, “The only thing good about his home run today is that it didn’t go as far as his home run yesterday.” We agreed that hopefully the teams will meet again sometime on a larger stage. I almost felt myself feeling sorry for the team and wishing it could’ve been a different SEC school that we just eliminated.
So yeah, everything about the Vanderbilt team spells nothing but good people. Even the little rocket in center field.
Go Beavs!

Spencer Jones is ranked as the # 74 prospect by MLB. He'll probably go higher, since some high school kids ranked ahead of him might not sign, and he will. The #74 pick is Seattle's, slot bonus money just under $1 million. He's a big guy for a position player, though, you don't see many 6-7 guys in MLB; Judge, and there probably are a few others. Richie Sexon was 6-7, he had some good MLB years but was a strikeout machine. Seems like a decent dude. I also noticed him leading the handshake line. He's had a ton of injuries so perhaps that makes him appreciate playing more. The HR he hit on Sunday might still be in orbit. www.mlb.com/news/mlb-draft-2022-bonus-pools-pick-values

1960 rookie of the year for the Dodgers was 6'7" Frank Howard. Played right field. Had a 16 year career. Saw him in St. Louis one time field a ball on the warning track and threw it on the fly to the catcher. He was also drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors. And yes, I grew up with the Brooklyn Bums and Pee Wee Reese.

Winfield was a freak athlete. I don't think Spencer Jones is also getting drafted by the NBA and the NFL.
Baseball Reference lists Frank Thomas as 6-5. Stanton is 6-6. Frank Howard played 50 years ago. Had a great nickname other than Hondo, he was called Capital Punishment.
Again, I did not say there were not tall players in MLB. There are. Just not a lot of them. And most of those 6-6 or taller are pitchers.

Giancarlo Stanton, Frank Thomas.......all 6'6"+ I think Winfield played hoops for University of Minnesota too Winfield led Minnesota to the Gophers' first outright conference championship in basketball in 53 years. Minnesota lost to Florida State in the Sweet 16. Florida State lost to UCLA by five in the National Championship Game.
