A quick re-cap of our 7-8-9 hole hitters in the USC series.
Slash for the series: .172/ .225/ .200
Summary: BA: 6-35 with 5 singles and a triple. 40 Plate Apperances: 35 AB, 3 BB, and 2 HBP. 9K's with a K:BB Ratio of 3:1
Only 4 players involved this series; Dukart, Dernedde, Kasper, Guerra.
Good news: OBP improved. Logan is back, that should help. Bad news: Numbers are anemic. Scouting Report: "Good field, No hit"

Good news: OBP improved. Logan is back, that should help. Bad news: Numbers are anemic. Scouting Report: "Good field, No hit" Dernedde went 0/10, which skews the numbers. In game one, Dernedde hit what probably would have been a bunt single but was ruled an RBI safety squeeze and fielder's choice. Instead of starting 1/1, he started 0/0. In today's game, Dernedde hit a chopper behind second that he almost beat out. Other than Dernedde: Slash for the series: .208/ .269/ .269
Any offense that Dernedde and Dukart give us, though, really are a bonus.
The real issue to my mind is Kasper's .222/ .222/ .222 slash line. We are really going to need more out of the DH spot after May Day.

If Wheeler can get back in the lineup and hit like he was pre injury, it will be a big lift. Scary injury though and it's really hard to say how he'll do.

Dernedde was robbed of a beautiful hir to right center by one hell of a defensive play on Saturday. I think another fine play kept him off the bases again in that same game.
I still question the logic behind putting Kasper in the DH spot, even though he got the go ahead rbi Saturday.

If that same move was made in post season it’s a real head scratcher. Guerra, Gretler, Trosky and probably someone else are all better hitters atm. I think Mitch is looking beyond this year giving young guys chances.

Dukart's defense helped us win that series. That counts for something beyond simple batting average/OBP.

Or is Kasper more of a project, someone that the staff is high on for maybe later this year or next year that they are trying to get up-to-speed?

I can only assume that he was showing something in practice, so the coaches let him have a go. But DH? To me, it’s strange to have your weakest batter in the DH spot.

McDowell Kasper Fuchs Trosky Dukart Guerra Smith
That's your list to pick from to fill two spots in the batting order. And with 5 non-conference games coming up, expect to see each of them to get playing time in one form or another from the above list. Or heck, maybe Coach Canham will have a lineup one game with all 7 of them starting.

Or is there another reason? Otherwise, I am not following why Kasper is playing, unless the coaches just think that he has a higher ceiling than Trosky.

Kasper has a higher hitting ceiling than Trosky right now for this season no question.

Hard to give up on a guy whose first plate appearance of the year was a pinch hit home run in the bottom of the 9th to send game to extra innings.

Our Coach is compassionate.
Kasper was home with his family, and about 50 of his "Homies" in attendance - if that isn't motivation to show out, what is?

I thought that might have something to do with it. Good! I'm glad Kasper could try his hand at hitting in front of his family and friends. Nothing wrong with that. And you can only raise your batting average by getting more at bats. So the poison is also the medicine.
