With the way the portal is now, I think recruiting classes should all be 3-4 players. Most years we’ll probably have at least 2-3 transfer out, but we’ll have a more full roster and won’t need to depend so heavily on the portal to make up for those losses. I would tend to agree with you but probably go a step further. The old days when SR could carry 10-12 players and keep everyone happy while also winning may be over. With the new transfer rules and injury problems seeming to be more prominent, it's tough to field a team and have sufficient subs to keep up with the top teams in the conference. You can either sign a lot of players every year in the recruiting cycle, or pick them up in the portal, but you can't leave yourself short-handed. The Beavs of this past season were short-handed at guard. Right now, they look to be short at guard, wing, and inexperienced at the 4 spot next year. Who knows what injuries may happen this fall, or who may yet transfer, or who may transfer next spring/summer. To avoid being caught short, you need to pick up as many players as you can. At least, that is the way I see it. I prefer SR's old way. 11 or 12 on a roster would be what I would like, but in today's college wbb, it's taking a lot of risk by not using every scholarship. A couple injuries, a few players transfer out, and you lose ground to other teams. The last few years the Beavs have lost one player to injury every year....Kat, Jelena, Kennedy, Taylor, and have lost major talent to transferring, Destiny, Sasha, Kennedy. It's a big risk to plan on a player being there for you, and not having a quality backup.

Injuries have always been a part of the game but they do seem more prevalent now. It seems that most teams lose at least one player to a season ending injury. If, and this is a very big if, the ncaa goes back to the sit a year out and actually enforce it fairly we should see a smaller number in the portal and hopefully not lose so many.

The coaches who successfully adapt to the new wild west of the transfer portal will have a distinct advantage. Will the players transferring in be better, equal or worse than the players transferring out? Going forward that will be as important as High School recruiting rankings.
