To me, Hollingshed was a bit of a disappointment this year. Not only did she not have a monster year in her final go round, she actually regressed a little from the previous season. I'm sure that is not what was expected of her when she opted to use the extra covid year. Colorado should've been better. They brought back EVERYBODY, and added 2 starters from another Pac 12 school via transfer. The whole league was way down, but they only improved their conference record from the previous year by 1 game (8-8 vs. 9-7). For this being their best year in a decade, they really don't have much to show for it. Were never in the race for the conference title (well nobody other than Stanford was, but they were never in the race for 2nd or 3rd either). Broke a long Tourney drought, but unceremoniously went out in the 1st Round. Got a little buzz for being the last team to lose a game at the beginning of the year, but had a weak OOC and started losing games regularly as soon as conference play began.

For landing a premier PG in the portal, look no further than NC State and Raina Perez. She's so big for them and has been since she transfered in. We had a shot at Perez also and missed. IIRC she had a weird short list before she decided on NC State. The Wolfpack were by far and away the best team she was considering, I think the rest were mediocre or worse teams. Can't remember all of them, but I'm fairly sure Washington and Clemson were 2 of them. I don't remember the Beavs being on the list.

Unfortunately we also have to be aware of OSU players who may want to go in to the portal. For instance both Talia and Greta were so highly praised coming out of high school, who knows how they are reacting to the type of coaching, playing time, etc. that they are receiving from Coach Rueck. I am sure they have various people, coaches, etc. telling them they should be playing more, would do better elsewhere etc. It must be tough these days as a coach to demand the effort, and improvement that the players really need to reach their potential only to have them believe that the Coach is just the wrong coach! Sure hope we hold on to all our eligible players for next year! Go Beavs! My money is on us not losing anyone to the TP.

Werebeaver,
I hope you are right about not losing anyone! I have a feeling that both Greta and A.J. have the talent and the determination to get much better. Also I would like to see Talia really work on her conditioning and strength. For Taylor, good health and good healing.
The big positive could be Jelena continuing to improve. She could literally be a "monster" force on the inside.
Finally, since we are wishing here it would be great to get Taya back! However can not blame her for moving if she wants her Master's degree in something OSU does not have.
On another note, if any of you watched the Creighton/Iowa women's game, were you as impressed as I was with the way Creighton moved the ball and their players around on offense. I would say that about 70% of the time there would one or no dribbles before the ball was passed to a team mate. Open shots were created everywhere!

I'm thinking the Beavs may not lose anyone, but I could be proven wrong in just a few days. If anybody were to go, Jelena may be the one who could profit the most. I think it's obvious she could start for a lot of schools. Mid majors for sure, and some majors. She really improved a lot since arriving on campus, so as far as coaching goes, this may be the best place for her. She definitely is learning a lot from Taylor, and is using the backboard well, and doing better at keeping the ball high. I would expect both Greta and AJ see Oregon State as a place where they have a chance to start and prosper, but you never know if someone gets homesick and wants to be closer to home. Neither one of them seem like homesickness is a problem for them, but Sasha was always a concern for me because you could tell she was a real Daddy's girl.

Somewhat of an intriguing entrant in the portal: Lauren Fields, a 5-9 G from Oklahoma State.
She entered the portal after a coaching change at OSU and was originally committed to Cal before Gottlieb left (perhaps USC would be of interest). She was a member of the Adidas team that went to Italy (along with Talia, Taylor, and Kennedy). She appears to be able to put some points on the board (15.4 PPG), but isn't very efficient in doing so (.329 FG and .284 3FG). She also doesn't have a great A/TO ratio.

Question,
Who was the last true high quality point guard that Coach Rueck recruited? For the sake of this discussion, please exclude Destiny Slocum even though you could make a case that she was "recruited". In fact, her ultimate decision to bail out before her eligibility was up I believe reinforces my position stated below.
My perception is that the impression among point guard recruits (and transfer portal players) is that Coach Rueck's offense stifles their abilities and possibilities for future basketball employment.
There is clearly some reason that year after year after year goes by with no real change in this pattern.
Am I way off base on this (I usually am on most issues!), if so please set me straight!
Thank you to all.
Go Beavers!

With respect to Taya academically, she's in her 5th year in the program. She graduated in 2020, and was already in a Master's program this year.
The Beavs have 6 players on this year's team who are in graduate school.

Jenny H has started following Lauren on social media. I've only seen a little bit of her game, but her shooting percentage has been bad all three seasons she's played. She has a lot of experience and did average 15.4 points this year, but I struggle with that shooting percentage. Even her ft% is only at .630. On paper, I would be much more interested in the other transfer Jenny is following, KK Deans from West Virginia. Much better shooting percentage and 3pt shooting percentage and equal scorer....and she's coming off a knee injury, which seems to be a prerequisite for attending Oregon State I'm looking forward to seeing who else becomes available.

Missouri's star guard Aijha Blackwell is in the portal. She's had 3 really good years at Missouri. 14.9ppg and 13.1rpg this season. She's from Missouri, so my guess is that she would stay in the mid-west, or south. She was rated #9 by Hoopgurlz back in 2019. She could play 2 more years. I would guess she will get a lot of attention from around the country.

Another PG in transfer portal is Ashley Chevalier 5-7 from U of Texas who entered the portal in December. She played HS at power house LA school, Sierra Canyon, where she lead her team to the CIF Southern Section Open Championship with 33-1 record. (She had 20 pts. and 7 assists in the title game). In Hoopgurlz class of 2020 she was #86 and #27PG. As a Sr. she scored 11.7 and 4.3 assists. As a Jr. she scored 13.4/6 rebs/ 5.5 assists and was 1st Team All-state Cal-Hi Sports. She is the daughter of 2 coaches: her dad Andre Chevalier is the boys coach for powerhouse Sierra Canyon (Marvin Bagley III, Scotty Pippen, Jr. Cassius Stanley, Bronny James, Cody Riley, etc.) Her mom is the former LA Pierce College womens' coach and a current AAU coach. Both played college ball at Cal Northridge. As a Fr. at Texas she played sparingly: 14 min/g 2.9pts. 38%FG but only 26% on 3's. She was not recruited by Vic Schaefer who came at the beginning of her soph year and she left the program just 7 games into the season. Don't know if she is good enough for Beavs, but as the daughter of 2 coaches I bet her basketball IQ is higher than most. This is not an endorsement, just food for thought.

Players like that I’m afraid scare Rueck. They have qualities for taking over a game if needed.

grad1973: Do you mean players who can take over a game like Mik? Or Syd? Or Marie? Or Aleah? Indeed, what exactly is it that you mean?
If you have something meaningful to say, why not just come out and say it? GO BEAVS!!
