Has zero to do with uo currently, but OK. Yes, I know he attended there forty plus years ago.

Actually, most people under the age of 50 don’t even know who he is. Granted, people who follow Track and Field are a small percentage of the population. But anyone who has followed that sport for more than 2-3 years knows who he is and of his association with Nike, Oregon and Oregon athletes.

Oregon (the state) has a fairly good-sized running community, and even if they are under 50, they know very well who he is.

Over 50 here and when Salazar was at UO and during his post-collegiate career, I was a huge fan. I grew up in Eugene and was Duck fan, especially of Track and Field, and distance runner.
We went to all the home meets, epic dual meets, conference championships, and Olympic Trials...
Somewhere in a box, I have a picture with Salazar and Rudy Chapa taken after a meet. For a long time it was on my bedroom wall, an inspiration to greatness.
Yes, he's turned out to be a s%#tty human and coach. I can easily separate his career at UO from his coaching career. It's not that hard to do. When I see how he's turned out, it doesn't reflect poorly on UO or Nike in my mind.

He ran Scandia one year when I also did the race. He came gliding in while I was chugging out on the out-and-back portion of the course between miles 4-5. I think he finished 28 minutes or something. He could really run.

UO used to have (maybe still does?) a foreign language day where many local high schools send their kids to Eugene for a class, seminar and such. I think I went twice, somewhere between 1978 and 1980. Anyway there was an hour talk about foreign languages and sports. And Salazar and Rudy Chapa (I know they were Spanish majors) were presenting the class. There were only about 15 kids in the classroom and we got to spend the hour with two heros!

He could really run. I don't ever remember seeing him run in person. Forty years ago, Lookingglass, a rural area near Roseburg, had an approximate 5-mile road race. They called it the around the block race. One of Salazar's training partners, Jeff Wells, showed up the one time I ran it. A few years earlier Wells missed winning the Boston Marathon by two seconds. He had these old worn out brown sweats but right before the gun went off, he dumped them and was in the Athletics West singlet. I was pretty fit and fast at that time. I had ran under 33 minutes for a 10K a couple months before. But the difference between a good local runner and a world class athlete is stratospheric. The first turn on that run is 3/4 miles into the course and I may have been within 200m of him at that point. Never saw him again until after the race.

LOL! “More than likely committed sexual assault”. Wow, there’s your modern day justice in action adjudicated by an arbitrator of all things. He may be a scum bag, but he deserves the presumption of innocence before torching his livelihood. How about beyond reasonable doubt? By the way, I hear that Alberto is available as a motivational speaker. He can be reached at 1-800-YOU-R-FAT. And he gives out free “massages” too. Happy endings not guaranteed.

If you had seen him run you would have remembered. He had the most awkward running style of any (successful) distance runner that I’ve seen in 5 decades of following the sport. It’s impressive that he accomplished what he did individually with that inefficient technique. Unfortunately it devolved into a “win at all costs” approach as a coach. The end result being this news - he’s banned from coaching and disgraced. It’ll be interesting to see if Nike stands behind him. They can certainly afford to, if they think he or their brand has been unjustly harmed.
