Pose a question to everyone. Although Gill had a decent crowd last night... It was probably one of the lowest crowds I had ever seen at a 'not called Civil War game anymore".
Rumors are, all them luxury seats/boxes are filling up in the FB stadium. Especially the over priced new West Side.
so question
Do you think if they renovated Gill.... people would buy up the luxury seating? Breath some life into that ancient horrible arena

I was actually surprised there was that many people there. No way on the luxury boxes. They work for football because the fans show up for 5-6 hours minimum. We don't have a lot of people that want to tailgate in their suite before a basketball game. Plus, you have to completely redo the entire bowl to make that work. I just don't think it's needed. If they want to improve the revenue.....sell beer at the game.

Any major modifications to Gill would trigger full ADA compliance. it would be more cost-effective to build a new basketball court which would probably recruit a higher level of recruit [at least for MBB].

Good point on the remodeling However, I don't think a new arena would have anything to do with our recruiting. We are in a small market. Consistent winning will be the thing that helps that. Gonzaga, Duke, etc.... don't have any issues recruiting to small arenas with no luxury suites.

For an idea of how Gill "could" be renovated, go to YouTube and search for Welsh-Ryan Arena Virtual Tour. I point out this example, because this arena has virtually the same architecture as Gill, suspended arch construction, and was constructed in 1951, 2 years after Gill opened. The Northwestern University arena renovation was just completed in 2018. The YouTube virtual tour shows what is possible, all it takes id $$, lots of $$.

Welsh-Ryan Arena, the permanent basketball arena, which was built within McGraw Memorial Hall was not built until 1983. Before then, the 13,000 seat Memorial Hall had to be reconfigured into a 7,013-9,500 seat temporary basketball arena. before each basketball game. Even though the Arena only dates to 1983, the remodel still cost $110 million and did not include the video screens in the center of the Arena, which were added before the remodel. The entire arena was down for a complete season to accomplish the remodel. Northwestern had the luxury of playing at the 17,500 seat Allstate Arena, a half hour away from campus, for a year. I am not sure that Northwestern is the best example.

If they're filling up, they're not overpriced.
I've seen no mention whatsoever of what non-luxury pricing will be on the west side.

I only cited Welsh-Ryan Arena at Northwestern because of the same architecture, suspended arch construction, that it shares with Gill and what is " possible" within a building of this type. The drawback is the capacity is now just over 7,000 and they spent one hell of a lot of money.

There are some ancient, horrible AREAS of Gill, to be sure. The sum of it's parts is a pretty cool venue. Some "modernizing" couldn't "hoit," though.

Well, Gill isn't one of the prettiest arenas, but it's pretty functional...and obviously built like a tank.
I remember attending a graduation ceremony in the early 1980s, when a mom (of a graduate) who was apparently having an anxiety attack (probably because of the large crowd), came up on stage. MacVicar inexplicably moved aside from the podium, giving her the mic. Before being ushered away, she said, "Everyone leave the building because it's about to fall down!"
I looked up at those huge steel arches and thought fat chance.

They have done tons of upgrades in the past 10 years or so. It is way better than it used to be. The new lighting, video boards, new chairback seating, uncovering the old windows on the baselines and just painting & illuminating the hallways have made it much better.

Gill is one of the best college bball arenas to see a basketball game. I attended OSU during the "Orange Express" days when OSU MBB was #1 in the nation. I now have season tickets to WBB. It is such a great place to see college basketball. The vibe is unreal. I've been to multiple college basketball arenas, and I haven't been to an arena I like better thank Gill. Matthew Knight Arena is more like a professional bball arena. I didn't like the vibe and the seating is too vertical. It is an impressive arena, but didn't have a college feel. I hope that any improvements made to Gill are cosmetic and don't change the vibe.

If the pricepoint for decent seats on the upper two decks is reasonable, I might consider moving. But OTOH I'm hopeful some east siders will move to the west side and I can move lower in my section with no price adjustment. I like sitting in the sun.
