My Dad and I went to the USU game in 1998. It was cold, but nice. Golfed in Smithfield (I'd have to look at a map). Smithfield is just north of Logan on Highway 91. Birch Creek Golf Course?

I went to USU for our 1998 game there, I think we won 20-16 or something close to that. It was at night, because of some big LDS convention in SLC during the afternoon. It was cold and light snow, it was a very small crowd. USU has a neat stadium, sort of built into the side of a hill. It has greatly improved its stadium and other facilities since then, thanks in part to work done by former USU AD Scott Barnes. They made a bigger commitment to their FB program to get into the MWC and have done a nice job in that league, which is a perfect fit for them. Should be a good game. Their QB is about 26 years old, he's older than Justin Herbert or Jake Luton, I think. Should be a good opponent, with a good fan base. Since they're not in Logan and away from nosy neighbors they'll probably be ready to tailgate. Day One of the 168th Semiannual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was held on October 3, 1998, the same day as the game. 20-16. Logan Bonner is 24. He is older than Justin Herbert, but Jake Luton is more than 17 months older. Bonner is old in his class, so he is in the same class as Herbert. Luton was two years ahead of both academically.

Scenic campus that sits at the mouth of Logan Canyon, a short hop from Bear Lake, and Idaho where retired Chicago Bulls/ Dallas Mavericks coach, Dick Motta ran the General Store. Logan is 15 miles from Franklin, Idaho and 35 miles from Kemmerer, Wyoming where J.C. Penney opened his first Dry Goods store. On to something relevant.
Aggie Larry gave a very accurate picture of USU football. Blake Anderson did a remarkable coaching job in his first year after Gary Anderson bailed out in mid-season and triggered a an exodus of transfers. Blake Anderson brought in numerous transfers to fill a roster. USU is a one back, 4 receiver Spread team that stretches the field vertically. Logan Bonner gets rid of the ball as quick as any college QB I saw this year. Almost as fast as "Niner" back in our salad days with Dennis Erickson. Our Coach used to unload it in 1.9 seconds or faster. So much for your pass rush. The Aggies have good receivers - good routes, good hands, and good RAC.
Utah State will be at a physical disadvantage, the Beavs are bigger, faster and stronger as a team. USU's air attack will test our DB's - our corners have to press and they will shred a sloppy zone. OSU is the bet, but the real game will be the over and under bet.

Aggielarry obviously doesn't know the rules for this board. if you come on here as a visiting fan you need to have an undeserved sense of self importance and talk down to everyone like you are Vince Lombardi. Larry seems like a solid fan that wants to engage in civil football discussions, but hopeful he gets the hang of it. (welcome Larry ) Thanks! I don't think you'll find many Aggies talking down to anyone. Brief history. We were in the old Skyline Conference. When that broke up in 1962 with the formation of the WAC, Utah and BYU conspired to keep us out. We drifted in and out of independence and poorly suited conferences, including the PCAA/Big West and the Sunbelt. Things gradually got worse and worse. We eventually had about 25 years of really abysmal football; almost considered giving it up. We got a lifeline with the last conference shake up in 2013. We've been awful so recently, we're just glad to have a stable conference home and to be having some success. I think we're going to have our hands full with OSU. You have an uncomfortable resemblance to the teams that have beaten us this year. I took a look at winsipedia.com. It looks like we've played a total of just three times, and you've won all three. Can you give a brother a break? I think we're due... I'm still working out whether or not I'll be able to go to LA for the game. I may be in Logan for Christmas, so I may have to do a watch party there. Go Beavs! Go AGGIES!

Beavers most likely to LA Bowl against Utah State. All GA references aside, I don't like this matchup nearly as much as San Diego State. The Aztecs are a very good defensive team with pretty extreme offensive limitations. They were able to overcome those most of the season, but I had a feeling the Aggies would expose them. So now OSU gets a much more balanced team that will be on a roll and looking for a big win against a Pac-12 school. QB can cause some issues for the OSU defense with his legs and arm talent. Beavers should be able to move the ball, but absolutely have to put the ball in the end zone consistently. Should be a good game. I also feel we matched up better against SDSU than USU. USU is going to give us a run for our money, that is for sure.

We hauled our old and used but newly purchased 1982 Kit Roadrunner 5th wheel all the way from Salem for the game. We pulled it with an old Forest Service Chevy 3/4 ton pickup (1989 model with a manual shift and no A/C). We were able to park on the east side not 50 feet from the entry gate in the NE corner of the Romney Stadium. I remember seeing snow in the hills above the stadium that day too. During the game we had US Senator Gordon Smith come from that Mormon convention and sit in our section near the wife and me. I remember thanking him for coming as I thought that was a nice gesture. We won that game 20-16 (as you said) and it was our first road victory in 18 tries going back to that UCLA victory back in 1994 (remember Don Shanklin?). After that game we headed to Stanford for another away game and were able to park our rig in the eucalyptus trees on campus for free. We won our second road game in a row 30-23 as well. Great memories! Edit: Attendance was only 11,682 for the USU game.

I think it is now called Maverick Stadium, thanks to a huge donation from a Utah/Wyoming oil company. Seems like there is a Maverick gas station/convenience store at every exit along the I-15/I-84 corridor in Utah and off I-80 in western Wyoming, once you get past Little America.

There used to be a Maverick station just outside Corvallis on Hwy. 20 heading to Albany. They tore it out years ago though. I remember going there to buy gas in about 1970 when it was 24.9 cents per gallon. The local name brands in town were all 32.9 cents which was way to rich for this poor college student! lol

Great memories! Edit: Attendance was only 11,682 for the USU game. I believe that you mean to say 19 tries. Oregon State went on an 18-game road losing streak between 1994 and 1998. The 1994-1998 18-game road losing streak was the longest since Oregon State lost 21 straight between 1979 and 1982. And the 34-3 loss in the Mirage Bowl in 1980 was also in the same period. So, 22 straight losses away from Corvallis between 1979 and 1982. And the game that broke the streak was a 14-14 tie in Pullman on a field goal with 31 seconds left. Oregon State lost the next three road games before finally winning a road game against Portland State in 1983. 0-25-1 away from Corvallis between 1979 and 1983. If you ignore the road win over Portland State, Oregon State went to 0-35-2 (the second tie was the Toilet Bowl) in the 37 road games between Washington State in 1978 and Washington in 1985. (And 0-36-2, if you include the Mirage Bowl.) The week after Utah State, Oregon State then beat Stanford at Stanford 30-23 for the Beavers first win on The Farm since 1968. Oregon State's consecutive road victories were the first consecutive road victories in the same season since the Beavers beat California and Oregon to end the 1969 season. The 18-game road losing streak would be Oregon State's longest until the 22-game road losing streak between the twin wins over Colorado in 2014 and 2018. (Thanks for wrecking the team, GAG!) You could really say that that win in Logan was the beginning of Oregon State's 1998-2013 run and the beginning of the end for The Streak.

I want to say that Shanklin and Rahim Muhammed combined for 0 for 5 passing or something ridiculous like that.

Well, that USU v SDSU score was misleading in a sense... ~TWENTY (20) SDSU players tested positive for COVID this past week and didn't play yesterday. I imagine the score could have been quite different had SDSU played with a full squad. Some of the guys at the USU fan board did some detailed checking. Turns out, one SDSU starting tight end was out. He was the only player on the first team offense or defense out. Five other players on the second and third teams were out. The other 14 players allegedly out are unaccounted for. None of SDSU's 8 first team all MWC players or 4 second team all MWC players were out, nor was their MWC coach of the year. By comparison, USU had 1 first team all conference player, and 2 second team all conference players. SDSU has a reputation of being pretty whiny when the lose. They are universally disliked both in the MW conference and in the state of Utah.

It SHOULD be a competitive game. They aren't going to "out-man" us, but they're well-coached. So are we, now. Beavs by a couple scores, I'm thinkin'.

The only SDSU game I paid attention to was when they played Nevada. Nevada was a very average team with a very good QA (legit NFL prospect). Nevada was completely on-dimensional (8 yards rushing on 15 carries), and still was very close to beating SDSU. Nevada was up 1 with 5 minutes to go, and SDSU drives down and makes a 35 year FG. Nevada then is driving, but SDSU baits Nevada's QB into 2 covered throws and turns it over on downs. Was a good game, but a game that didn't speak well of SDSU's overall quality and trend at the time. I personally wasn't surprised to see another good passing team, particularly a more balanced one, given SDSU trouble.
