Beavs checking in at 17,
Stanford 1, Oregon 9, UCLA 16 and Arizona 22 the other Pac-12 teams on the list. Preseason opponent Michigan is 11.
Later in the article, there was a coaches section of who can surprise and one of the anonymous coaches said this.
Coach 3: Washington State. “I believe Washington State can finish 2nd in the Pac-12 and make a very deep run in March Madness. They return everyone. They have a legit superstar in Charlisse Leger-Walker. They were in uncharted territory last year. Now they got a taste of the tourney and a taste of winning.”
I think that is NUTS, I think WSU took folks by surprise last year and I think they will have a MUCH harder time this year. But maybe I'm crazy. Thoughts?

There's "can" . . . and then there is "will".
Every year there are a couple teams around the country that put on Cinderella's sneakers. WSU is definitely going to try them on - and maybe they'll fit. They remind me a little of Arizona's breakthrough year with Aari McDonald - one superstar, and just enough talent around her to win.

She shot 35% from the field and 32% from 3. Those are horrible numbers.

Charisma Osborne's shooting %'s are 36 and 34 but, as rman pointed out, you need to get those offensive rebounds and UCLA is really good at that.

"She shot 35% from the field and 32% from 3. Those are horrible numbers."
Here's my take on C. Leger-Walker. She actually is a pretty good shooter. Her problem is that her accuracy % is lowered by the fact that she plays on a team that does not run a very organized offensive system, so she (and most of the other WSU players) end up having to take pressured 3s, and out-of-sync 3s, they would not otherwise take....On any given weekend Leger-Walker will put up more ill-advised 3s than Stanford or OSU guards put up in a month.
If WSU learns to use her more efficiently and more effectively, her % numbers will go up and WSU will become a much tougher team to beat.... She's an excellent basketball talent playing in a less than excellent system. At least, that how I see it..... GO BEAVS!!

Do you really think Leger-Walker would do better in a half court offensive system?

I trust you know that "a very organized offensive system," is not the same as a half-court offensive system. Lots of organized offensive systems give 3 point shooters a green light, but they are organized enough to make sure they get good shots. The Men's teams at Oregon, UCLA and Gonzaga are good examples of what I'm getting at.... GO BEAVS!!

I hadn't seen it, and it looks like it just came out. That's where I expected them to be - top 16 going in, I think they are a top 8 to finish the season if they develop like we typically see them do. I think they have a though time being top 4 though, as those teams just have another level of athlete that I suspect can still exploit this roster.

This is a year that is so hard to rank them. There is a lot of new to the team. If they can stay healthy and the freshman, including Jalena, develop to their current potential, they will be a tough match up for most teams.

Scott made a valid point at the dinner last night when talking about how far his team could go. He said that, after going through the PAC 12 schedule and the PAC 12 tournament, his players won't care who they're playing in the NCAA tourney; no matter how good they are, it's not going to be anything they haven't seen already.
So it matters not where they're ranked now or early in the season. I got the impression he thinks they're pretty good right now, and just going to get better as the season goes on.

Another fun bit from the Athletic article (folks , think about subscribing, it's dirt cheap):
• Nearly half of my ballot are teams from the Pac-12 and Big Ten. Why? Because I think those two conferences are going to be the toughest in the country this year. Because of that, and how challenging those schedules will be, we’re going to hit a point in the season when I will fully believe that a several-loss Pac-12 or Big Ten team is much better than a two-loss Big 12 or ACC team. Sorry. That’s just how it is. Prepare yourself now.
