All of you would have hired GAG. Every single one of you. Idk, I was pretty sceptical of the guy early on. When he was asked about why Oregon State, he talked about how he always loved coming here, but I think he only was ever here for one game and Utah didn’t stay in Corvallis. So 3 hours in Reser made him love the place? The first interview also made me uneasy, just didn’t like the guy. Smelled a whiff of phony about him. Good resume though, I would like to think in an interview I would have hit the pass button.

Mediocre Mike. The name fits because that’s what he was. .500 record in conference He had some great years and I love him for those times. And apologists will say that’s above average output at good ole OSU. Context!!!!! I’ve heard it all. It’s tiresome. GAG cratered us, but Riley was trending that way too. But, but Decarolis… All of you would have hired GAG. Every single one of you. You're dead wrong on that. PERIOD. It took very very little digging to get the real scoop on GAG. There was an AD who needed to cover his own arse with a bigger news story.

See? Now everyone has perfect 20/20 hindsight, so predictable. That's the thing about hindsight. It is much easier to see 20/20 in the rearview than the uncorrected 20/200 vision that we had in December 2014. By the end of the Michigan game in 2015, I had pretty much given up on the team. I did not attend a single game that Oregon State played. I skipped the Weber State game and watched the Michigan game. After seeing that, I gave up on the team. I think that I watched three of the remaining nine games. Otherwise, there were better uses of my time. I watched more the next year, but it seemed like the offense was not progressing and the defense was regressing. Some people were really excited, but it seemed like GAG did not know what he was doing. I don't think that hiring GAG was the mistake. The mistake was not making sure that GAG had a cogent plan to move the program forward, because he did not. Anyone with a passing knowledge of the sport or just reading people would have spoken with GAG for five minutes and known that GAG was not going to be a good fit. Everyone once in awhile, I like to read the posts from 2017 with several talking about how great we were going to be and me saying the opposite.

The last 5 years of the Riley years (5.8 wins a year by my math, 29÷5 is not 4.8) were the result of AD decisions not to support the revenue team/program and focus on the non-revenue sports.
Riley had his consecutive stretch of 8-10 win seasons and didn't get the support - if Jonathan has that kind of stretch and gets the kind of negativity Riley got at that point I'd suspect he could get jaded as well.
As far as Nebraska goes, he did a complete overhaul and had it back to the number of wins they were getting by season 2. If he'd have been able to keep Banker year 3 could have been another 9 win season. He had a top 5 recruiting class going on early that season before the losses started adding up. Anyone who doesn't think canning Banker for Diaco didn't effect game day or recruiting probably wasn't paying attention.
The Nebraska AD (Eichorst) ended up getting what he deserved (fired) and basically put the Cornhuskers on a bad path. Riley's replacement has topped out at 5 wins so far.

On paper, his stints at Utah State and Wisky had the makings of a rising coaching star. The details under the hood of the car did show signs of concern but none of us paid attention. I was fooled. Now look at the epic flame out of his career. He is a ruined man and coach of his own making.

Riley getting scooped up by Nebby and Wiskys coach disgruntled, and moving back out west, seemed too good to be true......and it was, as we found out. But I admit I was excited for a new chapter, intially. It soon became apparent GAG had zero idea how to handle a football program in a place like Corvallis.

Initially , GAG assistant coaches looked like an upgrade over the mish - mash that Riley had going on ( I was particularly excited about Siitake - however, he was already looking for his next promotion to 'anywhere' U ). Maybe the observations regarding BDC are partially or fully correct ( no money for coaches or assistants ), however , that just shows me that Riley was NEVER running the football program - he was 'running' towards the money , which he continues to do today. You could see in his actions, and his demeanor, that he took his sour attitude out on both the team and the University. So, BDC and his ex player advisory council , went after the bright shiny object of the day ( without doing appropriate full vetting ). I don't begrudge the individuals going after what they want / need, but, I see major shortcomings in character and discipline that created the last years of Rileys coaching 'expertise' and the rapid fire hiring and departure of GAG . Throw BDC in there, along with the GAG search group. I am pleased that we now, at least, seem to be working to a plan with a head coach that has an actual plan and that takes care of his assistants .

He was just pissed that he was being pressured to fire his assistants.

I guess in hindsight, we should have had a cue that GAG didn't understand OSU or Corvallis when he uttered "get our dux in a row" during his introductory presser. He seemed befuddled when a low murmur reverberated from the crowd......."what did I say?"
Go Beavs!!

POTY. Great take! BDC created the setting the lead to the GAG disaster!

He was here for 11 years the 2nd time and could have left way earlier if he was chasing money.

Pretty typical of OSU AD over the years. Lots of missteps going back to Andros Milton sitch/Rich Brooks/jimmy Anderson/Wagner/GAG..etc I feel like Barnes is somewhat in tune with what needs to be done to achieve success in Corvallis. Smith and Canham, imo, were great hires....two OSU heroes who also have top tier leadership qualities. They are invested in Corvallis, and obviously know the culture.
