UCLA ....January 10, 1976 Right. Thanks. I hope greshambeaver doesn't mind the reprint below of this 2018 post. It sums it up well. I wasn't a board member then, so today is the first time I've seen it: Yes, I think it was 1976. UCLA at Gill. My daughter was just one year old. We were in the upper deck as OSU beat UCLA in a runaway, part of UCLA's "lost weekend". Lonnie Shelton slammed a dunk through with a few seconds left to finish the contest, he was called for a technical as if you remember dunking was illegal then under the Alcindor rule. Lonnie looked at the ref as if to say "NO s%#t SHERLOCK"... game ended a few seconds later with a huge win for the Beavs. Lonnie was huge in this game as was George Tucker. Rocky Smith and Paul Miller were others I remember on the team that year. Now those were the days. The place was rocking and my 1 year old daughter was stomping her feet with every scream. She could barely walk, but she loved to stomp her feet. Great game, great times, great team.

By 1976 Wooden and Walton were both gone. Gene Bartow in his first year. But UCLA were the defending national champions having won the title in 75. UCLA still won the Pac-8 championship in 1976 and advanced to the Final Four, finishing in third place.

Geez, Louise! You boys are merciless with JW because she left, but give Destiny and Sasha -- who were much bigger contributors -- passes.
Be consistent.

The lost weekend was 1974...61-57 beav win with George Tucker hitting 4 free throws against Walton and gang. Lonnie's dunk happened in 76-77 when osu beat Richard Washington and UCLA 75-58. Lonnie may have dunked versus Cal too.

He, Ricky Lee, and Benson beat Roseburg and Rich Parson 60-45. I was nine and it hurt. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Washingtonwww.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/rich-parson-1.html

I did the unthinkable and transferred to UO for just my sophomore year (I know, I know - bad idea). But I did get to see some great track meets, and then there was the 1974 UO/UCLA basketball game. OSU had just beaten them a couple of days before and Tucker was all over the news as the freshman sensation.
Mac Court was nuts that Saturday, just bonkers. UO won, holding Bill Walton to well below his scoring average, but he was still unbelievable to watch. His passing from the top of the key was something to behold. Plus, 7-footers were not something you saw very much back then.
Anyway, the next issue of Sports Illustrated had the Ducks on the front cover with the caption, "Ambushed on the Oregon Trail." OSU was mentioned in the article, but not much, and I thought, hey - the Beavs beat them two days before!
I was so offended by the article (hyperbole coming) that I returned to OSU where I rightfully belonged, which is how I got to see Lonnie Shelton slam that ball. Hope some of you were there too.

That's right! I remember hearing something about that, now that you mention it.
Big crock of media BS.

Lonnie played for the Knicks in 76-77. That was my freshman year and I went to every OSU home game during the school time (missed the holiday games) that season, never saw him.

Lonnie signed a contract with the St.Louis Spirits of the ABA and all the wins he played in were vacated During his last year at OSU. He signed then was told he could come back to school and the courts declared him ineligible...got bad advice.

Good guy - I think he went to North Eugene HS.
