I think the Beavs are going to surprise a lot of people this year. Offense: QB they have 3 experienced QBs that they can win games with. I would guess the starter will be either Gebbia or the Colorado transfer Noyer. Gebbia is a former 4 star recruit that transferred from Nebraska. Smart QB with an average arm and is quick enough to scamper for a few yards if needed. Noyer is a big QB that has a bigger arm and can run a bit better. If he can pick up the offense I would guess he starts. There is also Nolan but I doubt he wins the starting job. He's not as accurate and as good of decision maker but is the best runner of the 3. RB: This has been one of the best positions recruited by this staff and it's very deep. Baylor is the most experienced but he's always played 2and fiddle to Jefferson and has never gotten to prove if he can be the #1 back. Fenwick is a big physical back that transferred from SC. He also is a very good receiver. Behind them they have former 4 star recruit and transfer from Washington who is more of a speed/scat back. There is Madison and Newell that are young big backs but we haven't really seen them play much. And then there is true freshman Collins who was a 4 star recruit and #3 APB in the nation. It will be interesting to see how they utilize the stable as they no longer have the proven work horse and the RB coach is new but I would guess Fenwick and Baylor will get the majority of the Carrie's. TE: Both guys are very good and can cause mismatches. Quitoriano is the bigger of the 2 and the better blocker and is almost like another lineman but is also a very capable receiver. Musgrave is the better athlete and receiver but he's had a problem with drops in the past but I expect that he's past that as he's more experienced now. Next is Overman who is balanced but was a pretty big time recruit. WR: This position has the Highest rated talent on the team and a lot of potential. Beason was a true freshman last year and was very productive. He doesn't have any elite skill but is a good all around receiver. Bradford is a very reliable 6th year senior. Harrison is an FSU transfer and was only allowed to play in 2 games last year but lead the team in receptions in both including the longest pass play of the season. Looks like he could become the go to guy and be dominant. There is champ that's 5"5 he's quick but I don't see him getting much playing time with the new talent on the team. There are 3 other big time transfers in Tongue (Georgia), Dunmore (Penn state), and Lindsay (Nebraska). Lindsay was a former 5 star recruit and big play threat but has had a problem with drops in the past. The other 2 it will be their first season and their playing time will depend on how quickly they pick up the playbook and if they're as good as their recruit rankings. OL: This is the strength of the team as they return all 5 starters. The best is 6th year senior Eldridge who was 1st team all league and on the Rimington watch list. They're very good and why I think this team could be dominant on offense. There is decent depth behind them as well. Defense: DL: The starters should be Hodgins at DE who has started for 4 years and is solid and a team leader. Sandberg is from Sweden who has only been playing football for a few years so I expect him to take a big step this year at DE. At DT I expect Minnesota transfer Schad to start. He's a 300lber and should solidify the line where they were missing a solid 300lber to play NT. Behind them they have pretty good depth at DE but not so much at DT. The next DT is Skelton who is serviceable but is a former walk on and is not going to scare anyone. Next they have Sio who just switched from OL and is 360lbs. Its yet to be seen how he'll adjust and how much he plays. The problem with DL has always been having the big 300 plus guys to play DT in the 3-4. LB: OSU probably has the best LB corps in the league and one of the best in the nation. Roberts and Speights are the ILBs and tackling machines. Robert's is probably the best defensive player and had 21 tackles in a game last season. OLB is responsible for providing a lot of the pressure in this D but last year they really struggled to do that. They are very deep at this position but I'm not too sure who will start. Gumbs is a former Oklahoma transfer and highest rated but he hasn't played hardly because of injuries but he transferred here to play in this system which who could thrive in of he stays healthy. Other names to watch for and will see the field is Huges-Murray a 6th year senior and large LB, Sharpe, Mccartan. All very serviceable. DB: They lost 2 starting CBs to the draft but have the guys to replace them. I expect the starters to be Wright and Kansas tranfer Jones. Wrights brother just went to the NFL but this 1 is supposed to be even better and could become a shutdown corner. Jones was a starter at Kansas and should be solid. Austin and Forrest are next and they have both started several games and are solid. At safety the best player is Grant but he also plays nickel so another guy will often have to replace him in those cases. Safety might be the most unsure position on the team. Julian is probably the best in coverage. Arnold and Oladapo are probably the other guys but they are better tacklers than they are in coverage and Oladapo is a former walk on to show you how they haven't managed to find a solid starter recruiting. They should have solid special teams as they've finally found a solid kicker. They have struggled in punt and kickoff coverage at times tho. I really think they will and should win this game. This team has really been close to becoming a winning team but just hasn't quite managed to win some close games and get out of their own way. I think that changes this year. I think the OL will allow the offense to control the ball and wear teams down and keep the Defense off the team who is the weak link. I wish we had a tune up game before as coach Smith's teams tend to improve as the season goes on. 42-31 Beavs! I have a question because this reads like a lot of Purdue fans who shade everything In the most favorable light. Where are you weak? Because I can sit here and say that Purdue has this recruit and that recruit at DT. But at the end of the day, the only two players who have actually demonstrated anything are low level three stars who have demonstrated that at times they don’t suck. There’s karlaftis, who will almost look comical relative to the rest of the team because he really could threaten to start at Clemson and Alabama, but with everything else I’m just wishing. Example. You run a 3-4. To not get run on by Zander Horvath, yeah you can be Wisconsin and just plug the line with big guys and linebackers with speed and physicality. But a 3-4 DT needs to be dominant. A lot better than Lorenzo MEAL was for us last year under Diaco. And I’d call it the same way if your roster was wearing gold and black. Like I said, we have 17 positions that have some level of questions at the big ten level. To some Purdue fans, that number is 0 lol. By the way your final score wouldn’t surprise me at all. I only lean toward the small margin that’s predicted for Purdue because many feel a lot will come together at once and it’s a long travel road game in week. If I had to pick my second most likely outcome it’s a blowout loss. So are there between 0-x positions where you have hopes, but there are questions. Here’s what I mean by that. At slot, Jackson anthrop starred the year before rondale came in. But he hasn’t played much since due to rondale and injuries .. tj Sheffield was highly recruited, but he’s going into his second year and he hasn’t actually done it at this level despite the talent being there. So.. to many Purdue fans that position is a gimme .. “we are fine.” To me, until someone proves it, it’s a question There are other questionable areas, but DL is our biggest weakness. I would assume that Purdue will try to run it until we show we can stop it.

Where is the best Purdue message board? Purdue rivals, unlike Oregon state, has a free board.. and it’s pretty active. Fair warning before you go.. lots of homers and lots of IU fans allowed to s%#t post endlessly. Example.. to me, here is what’s established at the big ten level.. big ten quality starters: RB Horvath WR bell WR Wright TE Durham DE karlaftis CB trice FS Allen Once you add guys who have some level of questions but maybe they showed talent but got hurt or they have serious positives but a question or two, the depth chart widens to QB O’Connell plummer HB Horvath doerue TE Durham Miller WR Bell WR Sheffield anthrop WR Wright OT Craig OG Witt C Hartwig OG holstege OT Long E. Miller DE Karlaftis DT Johnson DT Deen DT/hybrid Mitchell LB LB Alexander LB CB Trice FS Allen SS Grant CB I included O’Connell for example.. highly accurate QB with a good arm and an ability to lead comeback wins. He’s slower than s%#t though. Lucky if he runs a 5.4 seriously. I DID NOT include OC brothers .. the Auburn transfer linebacker who is supposedly a total beast in practice. He hasn’t done anything for Purdue. If you post over there, expect a lot of people to think the first list is 24-30 deep and the second is 55 deep … it MIGHT be.. but it’s not close to established.

I would assume that Purdue will try to run it until we show we can stop it. Where it becomes relevant is this way.. Zander Horvath isn’t that good.. he gets stats because he’s not a threat to take it to the house. So he will have a nice game with 100 yards because teams are like “we will give him his and WIDEN OUT in coverage on the other four guys.” So they will bracket Bell, wright, Durham and anthrop. Bell and Wright were both highly coveted by everyone in the nation and both have panned out. Durham is a good TE in terms of both blocking and receiving and anthrop makes plays that are there. It a team can widen out in coverage they can keep Purdue from being dangerous.. give up yards and points.. but not so much that they lose. That only works with a good DL.. once your DL needs help from the second and third level, even on Horvath.. the Purdue offense turns into something much more like what everyone saw against Ohio state two years ago. So the big wildcard will be .. has Oregon state made enough progress in the off-season to allow the back seven to widen out and maintain depth. If so, unless Purdue got a lot better, we are in trouble.

We are going to be a give up a lot between the 20's, but we'll make it really crowded in the red zone for teams. Lots of opposition field goal attempts are what I see.

Which would really mess with Purdue if we come out like we did last year. Our red zone numbers were awful after being outstanding the year before

And that would make for a very interesting matchup because bell and Wright are both well established home run threats.
This game may be a blow out loss for us.. however I think it’s going to be one of the most interesting games in recent memory

We seem to be a pretty confident bunch this week! I think the defense could be greatly improved in the secondary, and while the linebackers are solid, I'm still leery of the defensive line and the entire 3-4 scheme. Show me.

We don't have that many questions IMO.
QB There a 3 guys with P12 experience and can win games.
RB Baylor is experienced and Fenwick played well in SEC.
TE Quitoriano and Musgrave are both established and talented TEs.
WR Bradford, Beason, and Harrison have all played well at the P5 level. The rest is potential.
OL is very good and all have at least 1 season starting experience.
DL like was said is our biggest weakness and I don't think it is too much at DE as DT. Like you said it depends a lot on a dominant DT. I'm not so sure that is the case with the Beavs as the ILB still don't have any problem getting to the line of scrimmage and making tackles. They'll also only use 2 DL fairly often.
LB Is the strength of the D and have about 7 players that are starting P12 caliber. Gumbs is the unseen potential there at OLB but there are 3 other guys that have played there at a high level.
DB Jones was good when he played at Kansas and I don't expect that to change here and Austin has been good as well. I just expect Wright to jump him based on potential but he's not proven yet at CB. Grant is a multi year starter at safety and nickel but the other 3 guys that have started have never been proven to be playmakers but just solid.
The defense is the big weakness but they have been a bend don't break defense that doesn't allow many long TDs and stiffens up in the red zone. Last years team struggled to get off the field on 3rd and 4th down. They also struggled getting turnovers and pressure on the QB. Has that changed? That is the question.

We are going to be a give up a lot between the 20's, but we'll make it really crowded in the red zone for teams. Lots of opposition field goal attempts are what I see. Which would really mess with Purdue if we come out like we did last year. Our red zone numbers were awful after being outstanding the year before Offensively, we fell from 10th to 20th. Best in the Pac-12 to third. Nothing awful there. Defensively, our red zone touchdown numbers were actually better in 2020 than in 2019. And we had just as many red zone interceptions in 7 games in 2020 as we had in 12 games in 2019 (two). In 2019, Oregon State's opponents were 9/15 on field goal attempts in red zone drives. No blocks. In 2020, Oregon State's opponents were 8/9. No blocks. One of Oregon State's "stops" was a last-second pass into the end zone against UCLA with Oregon State up 17. John McCarten appeared to interfere with the receiver, but it was not called and the game ended with the incompletion. Two of the other stops were this fumble: And this fumble: In total, in 2019, Oregon State gave up 240 red zone points in 12 games, 20.0 ppg. In 2020, Oregon State gave up 142 red zone points in 7 games, 20.3 ppg. The difference between the two seasons was one made field goal in 2020 that was a miss in 2019. And, even then, more than a quarter of the red zone stops in 2019 were against Cal Poly. The only other game in which Oregon State had more than one red zone stop in 2019 was against Oregon, which had that Jaydon Grant forced fumble above and a shanked 24-yard field goal. If Oregon State's 2020 defense had had the 2019 game against Oregon and Oregon State's 2019 defense had had the 2020 game against Oregon alone, Oregon State would have had a better red zone defense in 2020 than in 2019. Instead, the reverse was true.

Of the 3 that have Pac 12 starting experience, only Nolan got a full spring practice. The other two had off-season surgery (hamstring and shoulder). Hopefully the two that were held out due to injuries are fully ready to go.

Gebbia looked really good in the games I saw. Lambert, Hagen and English are the real deal as defensive coaches but I’m not sure they fix enough by game one to stop you guys from getting to 35+. Amd I think we score 35 IF your DL isn’t stout.

Amd I think we score 35 IF your DL isn’t stout. Head coach Jonathan Smith has a great offensive mind. I don’t think of the Beavs as being a polished defensive team yet, but they are making progress. I think our offense will put up a better show than our defense. Gotta love the first games of the season! Everyone is undefeated and dreaming big…Fans wear their colors on their sleeves…So much potential, so many unknowns, so much hope. Good luck, Boilermakers. I hope it’s a great game! Go Beavs!!

How is your right tackle on offense and your left cornerback who covers the WR on the offenses right?
The reason I ask is that like rondale moore .. David bell and George karlaftis are chain reaction players .. unless you have a player currently playing like a projected first rounder, you’ll need help from other players .. whether that’s leaving a TE at home to block or rolling your coverage on the defense toward bell.
Similar to how Jermar Jefferson was established going into last season as a chain reaction player.
Which makes it yet again an interesting matchup because while I don’t think you have anyone established at that level .. you have more established as far as quality starters along the 24. I define quality as not exploitable at the big ten pac 12 level. So Aidan O’Connell doesn’t qualify because although he’s an outstanding passer, he’s slower than molasses. Jack plummer doesn’t qualify because despite his legs and size.. he has huge blind spots (the whole left side of the field in the second level and the TE lmao) and the game happens very fast for him.
Either of those guys MAY have improved that. If O’Connell did plyometrics all summer and now runs a 4.9, well how he can compete for all conference.
So also my question is.. including kicker and punter, how many starters are currently not exploitable at the pac 12 level… ?? like established.. not you hope. Example.. if the SEC transfer ran for x yards and showed signs but wasn’t the every down back and wasn’t a good pass blocker (just an example), you can hope he establishes that this year but I wouldn’t count him yet..
