Pac 12 research and development budgets by university. Here are the bottom three. Wazzu - $369M Oregon State - $264M Oregon - $111M You'd figure, they probably aren't taking anybody significantly worse than Oregon. So, who fits into the research university aspect and maybe into the footprint? Colorado State - $398M
Iowa State - $359M - AAU.
Kansas State - $353M - AAU.
Utah State - $284M Hawaii - $280M New Mexico - $240M
Kansas State - $219M
Houston - $195M Texas Tech - $194M Oklahoma State - $184M Rice - $183M - AAU. Nevada Reno - $152M Not making the cut because they're below Oregon. UNLV - $99M SDSU - $93M Texas San Antonio - $84M Wyoming - $80M North Texas - $79M San Jose State - $44M Air Force - $44M Boise State - $40M
BYU - $40M
Baylor - $33M Fresno State - $8.6M TCU - $6.5M
--
I just can't see the Pac taking anybody. It's either not enough TV sets, we've already got the area covered, travel restrictions, religious issues or the academics aren't there.

If all the domino's fall as rumored, there is no way the Pac-12 can stand pat. As a power 5 conference we are already bringing up the rear. The pac-12 should already be looking at and talking to potential add on's. Change is coming.

I'd say the Big 12 is bringing up the rear right now. Change for change sake is stupid. How does any possible addition help the Pac-12 become a stronger conference?

I don't like the public stance we are taking with the new Commissioner ! Sort of a wait and see, which makes me think that he will come up with a half baked play on Conference expansion - after ALL of the dust has settled ! Maybe there is more, underneath the blankets - but look at how quick the BIG 12 : SEC deal was outed , denied and then confirmed with opting out of current media contracts being cancelled and the full throated, in the open, discussions. With the SEC EXPANDING GEOGRAPHY and Conference team numbers ... worst case , I can see them setting up a playoff system that guarantee's a pretty heavy SEC contingent, with favorable brackets, playoff locations and seeding that eliminates other contenders ! I know - sounds conspiratorial( which I do not usually buy into that crap ), but - at the same time - when it comes to the South , and football - the only thing more important is moonshine and tobacco )

It increases the footprint of the conference? Houston, Kansas and Oklahoma State are big names. Texas Tech would help to shore up Texas, which is important. Kansas keeps the Big Ten out of Kansas City. The Pac-12 should be wooing Oklahoma and Texas, though. Or hell, wooing Texas A&M out of the SEC. Bring Larry Scott back to make this all work! I still think that forcing Scott out now was stupid.

Great list. The only exception I could think of is Air Force. Isn't their whole existence part of "Research" or "Training". Their graduates can choose to be officers in the "Space Force" for goodness sake. I think it would be difficult to exclude the Air Force on "Academic" or "Research" grounds. # of Alum, true athletic dept. or athletic spending, or because they are an Academy all maybes...but not because of Academics.(IMO)

They are a service, rather than a research university, though, which makes them tough to put on the cake list. They have a great national following. I tend to think that the service academies are undervalued in all of this.

Texas Tech and Houston are to Texas what Portland State is to Oregon. A very niche market. In Texas, you're a Longhorn or an Aggie.
Kansas City, and most of its largest suburbs, are in Missouri. They are Mizzou fans. Not KU fans.
Okie State is a clear # 2 in that state. It adds no value.
There is no need for the Pac-12 to expand its footprint. Strengthen what we have, instead of finding more ways to split the resources pie.

Also, Kansas City is smaller than every Pac-12 TV market except Spokane (using PDX as OSU/UO's market, not Eugene). No need to add a smaller market that isn't even KU/KSU-friendly. Lubbock is #145. There is no there there.

PAC oughta be more worried about who might leave conference now than who we would add…. Lol.

How many people knew Oklahoma and Texas were leaving for the $EC? Probably very very few. I highly doubt our commissioner is going to show his hand until any deal is done.

I didn’t know our new commissioner was Kenny Rogers.
