In Portland hosting a call in show "Calling All Sports" in the mid 70's? I remember him. Big and loud for the times. I think he was also the sports director at KOIN for a short time too. One of the first local guys to have an opinion, and usually not a popular opinion, the early days of sports radio. Will never forget the sexy gal's voice on the intro to the show. Other than George Pasero, who usually took a reasonable and pragmatic view, there wasn't a lot of sports opinion outlets in Portland back in those days. And it was different as it seemed people actually believed in their views early on, whereas today in sports media it's all about clicks and attention, just take an extreme position and try to make more noise than the other talking heads. Ted Dawson was different, the other sports media folks were reporters and play-by-play guys, just the facts, not a lot of opinion. Some good ones though...Jimmy Jones (KPTV/Blazers), Doug LaMear (KGW), Brian Drees (KOIN), Rick Metsger (KOIN), Steve Arena (KATU), etc. And to me growing up, Darrell Aune and Bill Schonely were the kings of the the radio, they both painted such a great picture of the action.

Steve Arena owns a dry cleaning business in Lake Oswego.
Rick Metsger served in the Oregon State Senate from 1999 to 2011. President Obama nominated Metzger to serve on the Board of the National Credit Union Administration in 2013. Metzger was fired from KOIN after reporting about a leaking nuclear waste at the Hanford Site. His report aired three weeks later and won the "Best Investigating Reporting Award" from the Oregon AP Broadcasters Association. He graduated from Centennial High and from Lewis and Clark and taught at Barlow High. He lives in Salem.

Wasn't Metsger also the media-whore jackass that demanded Mike Riley testify in Salem due to some stupid bar fight a couple of OSU FB players got into? Or maybe I'm thinking of some other media-whore jackass.

Any relation to this guy? A fun fact is that Richard Dawson was born Colin Lionel Emm in Gosport, England. He survived the blitz and then ran away from home to join the Merchant Marines at 14. After he was discharged, he got into comedy. He immigrated to the United States of America with his gorgeous (at the time) wife, Diana Dors, in 1960. He spent the early 1960s as a minor television star before getting regular work on Hogan's Heroes (1965-1970) and then Laugh-In (1970-1973). After Laugh-In was cancelled in 1973, he worked mostly in game shows, starting with the Match Game. In 1976, due to his success as a host on Match Game, he became the first host of Family Feud, a Match Game spin-off. So, no, no relation.

I've been servicing his store for several years now. Fantastic guy. Super down to earth and humble, and a very hard worker! A dry cleaner's day starts around 3am. Not for the faint of heart. I never saw Calling All Sports (before my time), but I sure do miss all the REAL sports casters. Watching the usual newscasters try to report the scores and highlights is just painful. Not sure why they axed most of the regular sports reporting. Big loss IMO. Turns out , you can't just replace an Ed Whalen with just any desk jockey. Nick Krupke is the only regular I can think of at this point.
