Bummer. He was a great guy. I know longtime OSU trainer Mike Sandago eventually followed him to Upstate. And our best coach (I think) between Ralph and Wayne. He was starting to establish some excellent recruiting ties in Portland that would have paid dividends had he not been dismissed. Risser listened to too many Portland boosters who though the Lil' General was the next great thing, and forced Barnhart to fire EP even though Mitch didn't want to.

He was done here as soon as he lost the majority of that 1996 recruiting class.

He won 13 games in each of his last two seasons, was 26-30 overall, with Corey Benjamin long gone. Losing Cunningham really hurt. Bickerstaff was a malcontent. Grady was a stoner.
We had moved well beyond that class, with Dino Tanner, Jason Heide, Clifton Jones, Adam Masten, Josh Steinthal. He had Brian Jackson as a freshman, and quiet verbals from two outstanding players from Portland, who instead ended up going to Kansas, I think. He would have got the Davis kid from Salem, who ended up going to Wyoming with Leroy Washington, and then to a cup of coffee in the NBA.
Was he a great coach? No, but better than McKay, Jay John and Robinson, by a long shot.

I thought his original set of assistant coaches would put the team over the top. He lost Holton after the first season I think, and the bearded guy (can't remember his name for the life of me and I can't find it on the internets) I think went off to be a HC somewhere shortly afterwards. What was his name? Anyways, I had high hopes.

George Felton is the bearded guy who left after one year. Former South Carolina coach, I think.

George Felton is the bearded guy who left after one year. Former South Carolina coach, I think. Yes, and he was a big reason for the top recruiting class in 1996.

George Felton is the bearded guy who left after one year. Former South Carolina coach, I think. Thanks. Looked it up and apparently he was here for 2 seasons before he left for Kentucky and helped Tubby Smith win the NC and a couple other appearances. I thought he was a big part of the early recruiting success (as Judge mentioned) and possibly unintentionally part of the exodus as he left for Kentucky.

I thought Eddie was a great coach and great ambassador at Oregon State. I thought he should have been given another year or two. I think he would have had success with Brian Jackson, Phillip Ricci, and Jimmie Haywood.
Was interesting to hear the post above about the quiet verbals he got from Portland. He was also close to signing Luke Jackson as well. I also thought he did a great job with South Carolina Upstate recently. Thoughts and Prayers with his family. I'll never forget the 3 top 10 upsets in 1999. Fun team to watch.
