There are several names being mentioned by most baseball writers that should be under serious consideration in Tucson. Some have previous ties to the UA program, others have a performance history the Arizona Athletic Director is very familiar with.
Andrew Checketts UCSB Chip Hale Detroit Tigers/ Arizona Diamondbacks Mark Wasikowski Oregon Brian Greene WSU Andy Stankiewicz GCU T.J. Bruce Nevada - Reno Eric Valenzuela LBSU Ben Orloff UCI Jordan Bischel Central Michigan

I don't know enough about all of those candidates. I do think Checketts and Stankiewicz would be trouble for OSU and the rest of the PAC-12(11).

Unless they just throw him a bushel of money, I can't see Checketts leaving a nice place like Santa Barbara for a dump like Tucson.

Depends on what they are paying him at UCSB. Not a cheap place to live. Only thing I can find is that he made about $306k in 2019, but don't know how accurate the source is. In a city where any house under about $2 million leaves a lot to be desired, that salary would not go that far. No, that area is not cheap. But he's lived there for almost 10 years, so he's probably had a mortgage long before property values absolutely skyrocketed. That salary, plus camp money, etc., goes far enough if you have a 2011 mortgage, especially if you've been able to refinance. It's like Corvallis, if you bought a house in 2011 your mortgage is probably half of what it would be if you bought today.

Not a cheap place to live. Checketts has turned down other opportunities because he and his family love it there and he doesn’t have to be gone weeks at a time recruiting out of state.

30+ years ago I was at a memorial for my grandmother...My now former brother in law's grandmother attended, who lived in Corvallis for many years..She told the story of when she was first married, they paid $15/month for their house...because they couldn't afford $20/ month..that would have been in the 1940's I think...Of course back then if you made $10K a year you were doing pretty well! I am always struck by Andy Landforce's story. He was making what 62.5 cents/hour in 1938, and that was a lot of money back then for someone without a college degree. The average income in 1940 was $1,368 per year. $10,000.00/year in 1940 would be like upper 10% of all income-earners in the country.

Can’t say I know what Checketts is paid these days… but pretty sure it’s more than $300k. He’s had a lot of interest every year.

Honking my own horn, but let's not forget tuition cost changes bennyshouse.com/thread/17057/outrageous-tuition-circa-1983When I was there, tuition was $1,190.00-$1,338.00 per term. I think it is more than three times that now.

California only releases details after the fact, but Checketts made $306,748 in 2019. Arizona paid Jay Johnson $520,000 in 2020. Nate Yeskie made $260,000 as the pitching coach.

Wasikowski would be sweet.....blow up the quacks It’s silly his name is even on the list. Now if it was Phillip Oliver Holz that’s a different story altogether!
