Here’s the story www.cbs8.com/article/sports/olympics/jade-carey-individual-olympics-invite/507-0107bacc-6248-4a33-81db-9a9c0167832eIn an ill-considered attempt to try to open up more individual Olympic spots to competitors from non-dominant countries, the FIG (International Gymnastics Federation) decided to reduce the National team sizes from 5 to 4 and to make that many more individual spots available. Qualifying for those was determined outside of individual national team selection/trials but through a series of international competitions. Jade competed very well and won one of those spots, locking it up before the US Olympic trials even started. For those who might not know, Jade Carey is an Oregon State women’s gymnastics signee who has yet to compete for the Beavers while she trains for the Olympics. Latest news is that she still plans to compete for the Beavers after the Summer Olympics, even though she’ll be 21 when she begins her collegiate eligibility

Interesting article. I think that was a smart move on her part. It will be pretty neat to have an Olympian competing at OSU. Anybody know when that last happened here in any sport?

I hope to God someone has accomplished this since 1968 but Dick Fosbury was between his junior and senior seasons when he won gold in the high jump in Mexico City and he subsequently won his second NCAA high jump championship in the spring of ‘69. If memory serves, wrestler Heinrich Barnes competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics for South Africa then came back in 2009 placed eighth at the NCAA‘s.

Almost. But it doesn't say which ones came back after the Olympics and completed their NCAA eligibility at OSU. In addition to Fosbury, Jess Lewis came back and wrestled for OSU in 1969 and '70 (Winning NCAA's both years) after competing for USA at Mexico City in 1968.

It says Olivia Vivian went before our Freshman year. That would’ve the last one.

Thanks for the info. Although she didn't compete at OSU, we should give a shout out to women's softball coach Laura Berg - 4 time Olympian, 3 gold medals, 1 silver. Not too shabby.
