Not sure where you are getting this from, but to my knowledge athletes who have needed shoulder surgery in the last 10-15 years at OSU have had plenty of success. Canfield and Moevao come to mind, Canfield especially who at the time was told he may never be able to play quarterback again after his injury and ended up with one of the best seasons as a passer in OSU history before he was done. Lyle also gave an interview with the GT where he stated how thankful he was for the OSU orthopedic staff. OSU has a very capable surgeon whose reputation in town is nothing but positive from every person I've talked to.
Now, there are surgeons in town who do NOT do a good job, but they are not treating OSU athletes.
For the love of God people! It was an off the cuff statement from things long ago. Are you all Pr folks for the Corvallis surgeon alliance or something?

Hope he got it somewhere far away from Corvallis.

This a reference to Shayne House's troubles with his shoulder. It was 25 years ago, but some of those memories die hard.

Yes, but those were issues with the training staff, not necessarily the Doctors doing the surgery. The complaints were that the training staff was so slow in diagnosing injuries that they made the problems worse and in some cases, beyond repair. That's not the Doctor's fault.

Wasn't House also an outstanding pitcher in high school? My admittedly uneducated guess is, his shoulder was already at least partially shredded by the time he got to OSU, with how high school/Legion pitchers were overused back then. As I remember, he had labrum/capsule issues, which were pretty hard to repair back then. Compared to today, 1999 was Civil War surgery.

He pitched until his sophomore year and then did track. He ran 15.9 in the high hurdles. He was a great basketball player (point guard!) and also was a decent kicker and punter. House was originally diagnosed with tendinitis. He had arthroscopic surgery on September 28, 2000, for labral repair. He had a second surgery in the summer of 2001 on his right shoulder capsule.

I thought he played baseball longer than he did. He was clearly injured when he arrived at OSU, as his shoulder bothered him immediately. osubeavers.com/sports/2001/4/6/207860101Ask any orthopedic surgeon (yes, I know some). Shoulder surgeries are some of the most difficult and the recovery rate for athletes who throw for a living, like pitchers and quarterbacks, are not good. Luckily Jacob Melton does not throw for a living so his baseball career should not be significantly impacted.

If I recall correctly, when he first got here he was supposedly the ONLY healthy or available QB for the first practice or two so he got every snap, something few freshmen QBs do, and tweaked it right then.

That was the narrative but that should not cause that much damage, if any, to a previously healthy shoulder.

While it was the first practice or two that he was the only healthy QB, as I remember it he was the only "live arm" that we had as far as the staff was concerned, and he just flat threw too many balls through fall camp.

Generally speaking, Wobig, who has been the team surgeon since 1999 has done really good work. And, of course, he has been the team surgeon for basically 20 years... so... if there was a problem, I am sure he woudl not still be there. Graff, on the other hand, was some what notorious and eventually demoted and replaced. And, if you have ever been inside of Beaver Sports Medicine (I went there when my old ass stepped off a ladder wrong and suddenly I couldn't walk!) it is absolutely festooned with signed jersey's and pictures. There is no bad blood with OSU and Wobig.

There is no bad blood with OSU and Wobig. Wobig hasn't been the team surgeon for ~15 years though. I believe that is still Dr. Pennington (although he left his position at Samaritan this year, so not sure if he still is or not). Only know this from having a procedure done with him in the last year. Don't know who Ben went through to have his surgery done, but if it was Pennington, then he's in good hands.
