I woke up at 3am-ish. CBS news had an interesting snippet of a UFO piece come up. Outside my pay grade to comment on, but it did cause me to pause and think of posting something here. Is it possible to discuss civilly? I would have said I was a non-believer, but just the short piece and interview with former military pilots lends me to try to find more info. Thoughts?
(maybe wrong board...if so sorry Mods. If not too difficult feel free to move)

Sure it can be discussed civilly. My thoughts: So many stars in the sky, so many worlds likely to be apart of a solar system attached to those stars, even a small percentage of life-bearing planets would mean untold amounts of such planets in our galaxy alone. A small percentage having intelligent life would live who-knows how many species. Could some have discovered the secret of interstellar travel? Would they care about us to take a look and observe?
Why not? If they do, what can we do about an interstellar civilization taking an interest in us? Probably nothing. So no use worrying about it. It's like worrying about an asteroid taking out the earth. Could happen and we probably couldn't do much about it. So, those objects could be something observing us that we can do nothing about.
Or they could be made here on Earth by someone, including someone in the US, using technology that very few possess.
In the 90s, I read a few conspiracy theory books. Not just the-CIA-killed-JFK type of books, but out there conspiracy books that promoted the idea of The-One-World-Order type of stuff. None Dare Call it Conspiracy by some John Birch Society members and The Unseen Hand by Ralph Epperson (I think) were two such books I read all the way through. I started to read a third, Behold a Pale Horse by William Cooper, but decided I had had enough of the subject because, like alien craft, it was something I could do nothing about if it existed and I didn't think it existed anyway.
However, if I recall correctly, William Cooper described in Behold a Pale Horse an event when he was in the Navy and was serving at sea. A large object emerged from underwater and took off through the air. Cooper wrote that he and other Navy personnel on the ship knew there was no way such an object came from known technology. Cooper's experience sounded very similar to the experience that the Navy Pilots talked about in the CBS 60 minutes episode that you describe. Cooper sounded like a real crackpot to me. Maybe he was less so of one than I thought.
In the end, the only thing for sure we can say for sure about what the Pentagon has released is that some military personnel saw objects that they cannot explain. Any explanation for it at this point is pure speculation.

I agree with both posts. Why not? I personally think it would be pretty arrogant to think we were the only species in this incomprehensible galaxy.

I thought it was interesting that one of the pilots alluded to the thought that he felt it would be better if the technology was from someone other than another Nation here on Earth. Like if we are that far behind (fill in the blank...China, Russia, N Korea etc) it would not be a good thing.

My bet is that 99.9% of what is being seen is experimental tech and/or weather balloons (I kid about the weather balloons.) most major nations have secret toys. How much money does Darpa get to spend on things we never here about.

I remember Carl Sagan saying that it would be foolish to think that we are all alone in this universe, so personally, I like to think that there are other life forms out there, but probably not like the Star Wars/Star Trek type.
But nah, the pyramids didn't need alien help to be built, and I'm skeptical about most sightings. I have little doubt that the US and other countries are probably continuously experimenting with technology and flight in ways that are not public.
I'd be very disappointed if the aliens flew all those thousands of light years and didn't stop by for a beer and some steaks. What kind of neighbors are they anyway?
