Don't forget Dallas Buck who plunked 22 in 2006. Maybe it's not such a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Not a good comparison. Abel's command is off and he can't get out of the 3rd inning I mean, he has gotten out of the 3rd inning in each start of his entire Oregon State career? And Abel's last start was the first time that he has not gotten out of the fourth in his entire Oregon State career. Dallas Buck did not make it out of the fourth against Texas-Pan American in 2006 and did not make it out of the fifth week following. He still rebounded to throw an eight-inning win against Stanford in the Corvallis Super Regional. (Thanks to Mitch Canham's seventh inning double, which scored Bill Rowe.)

My point being, Abel isn't the same guy, and if he continues to struggle with command, we may see more early exits based on the level of competition moving forward

Don't forget Dallas Buck who plunked 22 in 2006. Maybe it's not such a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Dallas Buck plunked 32 in his even better 2005 season. Buck holds the single season and career records for hit batters. In 2005, Buck plunked 32 and walked an additional 51, issuing 83 combined free passes. In 2006, Buck plunked 22 and walked an additional 60, issuing 82 combined free passes. In 2021, Abel has plunked 16 and walked an additional 33, issuing 49 combined free passes. Abel's ERA and WHIP is between Buck's 2005 and 2006 ERA. No one can hit Abel, though. Abel's BAA is .149, which ranks third on the team behind Justin Thorsteinson and Mully. No one could legitimately touch that on the 2005 or 2006 teams. The problem is free passes, too many of them. Too many players are just leaning into one rather than trying to pull off the impossible and actually making contact. I knew someone like you would pull up better stats. I don't have a problem with HBP or BB, but this year they just seem to come at unfortunate times. Our pitchers are excellent, but in a tight situation, they struggle. Post season play will be interesting.

The problem is Abel will fool the 9 hole guy with two wicked pitches go 0-2, and then plunk him......he's done this regularly...he's pitched out of it at times, but its catching up to him. It is not sustainable when the level of competition goes up

It is not sustainable when the level of competition goes up Abel's 16 HBPs: Kansas State: Hit the five-hitter with the first pitch with one out. Struck out the six-hitter. Induced the seven-hitter to ground out to third. Hit the eight-hitter with what would have been ball four. Justin Boyd got the start in the opener and was at first. He committed an error to put the nine-hitter on and moved the eight-hitter to second. The leadoff hitter moved them over. The second-hitter brought both runners home, one unearned. Boyd started against the first two lefties and has only made one other start. Otherwise, he has mostly been a reserve in mid-week games. He has only otherwise pinch ran once against Oregon, scoring to put Oregon State up 4-1. The Beavers blew that lead and lost 5-4. Boyd's one error is his only error in 37 chances. Grand Canyon: Hit the leadoff hitter with the second pitch. Induced the two- and three-hitters to fly out to right and left. Struck out the cleanup hitter. Hit the eight hitter on an 0-2 count. Hit the nine hitter on a 1-2 count. The leadoff hitter hit an infield single to load 'em up. Abel then struck out the side. BYU: None. Oregon #1: After giving up a run, hit the seven-hitter with the first pitch to load the bases. Abel struck out the eight hitter and induced the nine-hitter to fly out to center, not deep enough to score the runner from third. The leadoff hitter tripled home all three runners to put Oregon up 4-0. Washington: Hit the three-hitter on a 1-1 pitch with two outs. Induced the cleanup hitter to ground out to third. Hit the leadoff hitter on a 2-1 pitch with two outs. Induced the two-hitter to ground out to first. Hit the three-hitter on what would have been ball four. Struck out the next two hitters and then picked off the three-hitter. Utah: Hit the two-hitter with the first pitch with two outs. Walked the three-hitter on six pitches. Induced the cleanup hitter to fly out to right. Hit the leadoff hitter with the first pitch. Doubled off the leadoff hitter on the next pitch. Oregon #2: Hit the three-hitter with the second pitch. Doubled off the three-hitter five pitches later. California: Hit the nine-hitter on a 1-2 pitch to put two runners on. Pitch number 73. Brock Townsend was put in to replace Abel. The leadoff hitter sacrificed both runners over. Jake Dukart committed an error to load the bases. The three-hitter hit a two-run single, and the two-hitter was thrown out at second. Townsend induced the cleanup hitter to fly out to short. UC Irvine: Hit the six-hitter on the second pitch to put two runners on with one out. Abel then walked the seven-hitter on five pitches. Abel rebounded to strike out the eight-hitter and then induced the nine-hitter to ground out to first. Hit the three-hitter on a 2-2 pitch to put two runners on with one out. Struck out the cleanup hitter. Walked the five-hitter on five pitches. The six-hitter put Irvine on the board with an infield single. So far, Kevin Abel has allowed 18 runs, 17 earned. Exactly half of the runs came in the 12.2 innings in which Abel plunked a batter, one unearned, an ERA of 5.68. In Abel's other 37 innings, he has allowed nine earned runs, an ERA of 2.19.

Wilky, I love all the stats, but they don't tell the whole story. KA needs to be better for us to make a run, period. I doubt there's anyone in the dugout that would disagree.
It starts tonight.
