So if I went to the football board to talk smack about how bad football is I'd be ok? It would be fine with me if that's how you feel. Didn't realize these message boards couldn't include controversial statements. Aww, did you get your feelings hurt over a little mild criticism?

Suns had no 1st Round pick. Carrington, their first pick, was a 2nd Round Pick (a guard), #20 pick overall. She shot 43% - and only 28.5% from '3'. 63 assists w 70 TO. Wasn't a starter, averaged 24 minutes per game, but led the team in foul-outs. Huh?

Aww, did you get your feelings hurt over a little mild criticism? No. The point here is you are part of the problem with sports like the WNBA establishing a fan base. By badmouthing the sport, you project your opinion that it's not worth watching, which projects social peer pressure to also 'not care' on others. The old rule of "if you can't say something nice ..." applies here. This is the women's sports forum, and is the top level opportunity for OSU women's basketball players. So if you care about OSU WBB, then it follows that you'd care about the player's opportunities beyond OSU. Clearly you do not, that's your prerogative. It's also our prerogative to point out that your opinion is not appreciated here, as it directly denigrates the dreams of players like Aleah.

The biggest problem with the Wnba is diversity across the country. They need to find a way to expand and continue to grow. Not enough teams in not enough cities right now. Lots of good players go begging for a chance to play. Right now it just feels like they are a marginal product at best. Why can't the Trailblazers for example help build and maintain a Portland women's franchise? That goes for all the Nba teams to help promote women's teams in their respective areas. I don't know how much Nike is involved other than uni's but that is another source of financial aid that could be tapped into.

I believe that Portland did have a wnba team called the Portland Fire. It only lasted a couple years. At the time of its dissolution there was interest in purchasing it but a deal could not be worked out. In my opinion, the main issue that keeps me from watching more is that they play more like the men in the nba and less like the women in the ncaa.

I don’t mind at all that he doesn’t like/support the WNBA. There are lots of other sports and pseudo-sports which I have no interest in. But it’s silly and pointless for me to go on a NASCAR or X-Games or Modern Pentathlon message board and pompously declare that “nobody” cares about your sport. And if I did I would not be surprised to have such a post greeted with pushback. As far as what it takes to make the WNBA more popular, I have no idea. That’s not really my job as a fan. I do know that my time for viewing/attending sports is fixed and I’m currently at my limit. For some new sport to claim some of that time and attention something else has to go.

You are kidding right? Why should a money making business try and support a money losing business? If the money losing business can't make it on its own it shouldn't survive. Maybe Nike should support a struggling athletic wear company you know just because its the right thing to do.

A couple of things - For a short time, there was another professional basketball league for women. Portland had a team in that league. I knew one of the players. My knowledge (there is not much) is dated and mostly comes from her. She was an Aussie and is now a citizen of Malta. She might be 42, has a couple of kids and last I checked was still the captain of the Maltese national team.
Anyway, I think the WNBA has the wrong business model. We don't like our (OSU) women's team because they have a better or equal product compared to the men's team. We like them because it seems like family and even if we don't know anyone on the team, we feel as if we do. I think the WNBA needs to have at least double the amount of teams and regionalize it. Maybe there would be 32 teams. Make sure each team has five or so players from their designated region. Maybe the average salary would be a little lower. Travel would be mostly in your own time zone. Give the citizens of Portland or Sacramento, or Omaha, or San Antonio, or Birmingham a stake in their city's team. I think you would have more crossover fans from D-1 teams and keep and possibly grow the fanbase of formerly athletic women that like women's sports. And the games are played in the summer. I think you could have some big crowds by setting up a court in a baseball stadium. Anyway, those are my nickel's worth of thoughts.
