Excited to see where Aleah gets selected.
The second pick, Awak Kuier, a 19-year old from Finland, was down to Oregon and Oregon State before choosing to enter the draft.

This draft is catching everybody off guard. Pretty much everything after pick #2 has been unexpected. Aari went #3 to Atlanta and Onyenwere went #6 to NY. Pac 12 representin' so far.

Slocum went #14 to Las Vegas (2nd pick of 2nd round).
This draft has been bizarre. Some huge reaches. Good players still left on the board. Seems like some teams aren't even trying. I can see several first rounders getting cut before the season starts.

Ok I am going to say it but basically nobody cares about the wnba. We get it. You don’t like women’s sports.

I start caring about the WNBA when one of my favorite college players makes one of the teams. Our recent elite OSU college players have not really been able to stick in the league, with one possible exception. But, if Aleah makes the team, I'm an instant fan and might just take the drive to go see her play.

I don't normally look at the picks in the WNBA draft, as I just don't have much interest. I noticed, however, that about 6 of the players chosen, and 3 I believe in the first round, were from other countries. If the pay is so far below European levels, why would they want to play here? And why would a league trying to draw interest from home grown fans want to draft players from far, far away that their local fan base has never heard of?
In the early days, the NBA had a 'territorial draft' so that the Celtics could get the rights to New England players, the Knicks to New York players, etc. Admittedly, this was before national TV allowed you to follow or develop interest in college players from outside your region, but it made a lot of sense for a struggling league trying to establish itself.
If there were a WNBA team in Portland, I wouldn't pay much attention to it. But if they had Syd, Marie, Kelsey Plum, Satou Sabally, or players like that on the roster, I'd take an interest.
Just my thinking.

I don’t think they make more in Europe, except for a few outliers: careertrend.com/the-average-salary-of-a-womens-professional-basketball-player-13657126.htmlI like the idea of keeping players regional, especially since there a few programs that draw really well that could feed into them. At this stage, marketable players probably mean a lot more than winning. US Women’s Soccer has both aspects going for them and the revenue has followed.

Goodman to Connecticut in the 3rd round. That’s equivalent to a late first-rounder for the NBA. Not in terms of making a team, but in terms of being that level of player - if the WNBA also had 32 teams she would be.. To put that in perspective, Gulich’s senior year we had the equivalent of 4 future first-rounders, and 3 still on the team until this year. I suspect we will end up having more than 1 on the 20-21 team when it’s all said and done.

This is proof positive that Rueck and his staff develop players for the next level.
