Not vintage Mully. It took him 35 pitches to escape the 9th. Unusual for him. Well, he’s made a few 9th innings interesting over his career. But all great closers find a way to shut the door without their best stuff, and Jake did that last night.

Lots of free passes given to Utah by all our pitchers. Luckily we snuck out with the W.....those are the kinds of things, along with inability to throw out base stealers, that will lead to losing games against better opponents.

I'm not too concerned about our pitching or defense. Although the ability to throw out runners at second may hurt us against good teams. If the offense can continue to improve this team could make noise come tournament time. Even if we don’t host, we may be the team no one wants in their regional.

Yah, that bottom of the 9th in Game 2 v Hogs was also very interesting - he almost collapsed into a stress induced coma after getting the groundball to turn the double play to end it - those were good days, these are good days

We have been really blessed to have Mully locking down the closer spot the past five years and spoiled as a result. 35 pitches is the most pitches that Mully has ever thrown in a ninth inning. Fun fact. The last time that Mully threw more than 22 pitches in a ninth inning: The second Mississippi State game in 2018. Mully threw 12 pitches in the eighth and 33 pitches in the ninth. (Mully was pitching on two days' rest after throwing 42 pitches against North Carolina to pick up the win.) Mully got the first five in the Mississippi State game before giving up two walks and a base hit. The next hitter leaned into an 0-2 pitch that was a hair inside for an HBP to load 'em up. Mully then induced Jordan Westburg (picked #30 overall in the 2020 MLB Draft) into a game-ending groundball. A fun fact on the fun fact is that the head coach for Mississippi State is Gary Henderson, who is now the pitching coach for Utah. And those are the only two times since the second game of 2018 (against Gonzaga in Surprise) that Mully has thrown more than 22 pitches in a ninth inning.
