Claunch 1 for 7 (.250 for the year) Ober 2 for 7 (.230 for the year) Casey 1 for 3 (.274 for the year)
Armstrong 5 for 8. (.370 for the year)
I think this is where the comparison to recent Beaver teams falls short. We had a lot of hitters through the heart of the order, and any one of those guys could really make you pay or get a rally going. But this year, against weaker teams, the “best” hitters on the club can’t buy a hit.
We all know they have the potential to be tremendous hitters. Why aren’t they reaching it?

Ober is starting to make contact again. Fewer strikeouts and fouling off tough pitches to extend at-bats. We will know if the trend continues soon enough with actual base hits. For the last 4 games, he is 3-11. Not good. At the same time, he has 5 walks so his OBP is .500. Very good. Still have hope, but the pitching will get tougher again.
Edit:Ober has also been plunked at least once so his OBP is even better.

We may get a quick 'read' as soon as tomorrow eve. on whether the Beavs can/have overcome their complete lack of hitting against a quality pitcher.
Gerling (UW) pitched 6 innings last Friday V. USC in a 3-2 loss. Surprisingly he was relieved after 69 pitches at the end of the 6th: 6 IP, 1 Hit, 1 BB, 8 SO.
UW bullpen 2 pitchers - (Bloebaum & Delorefice) gave up all 3 SC runs in the 7th: single / double / hbp / hbp / single - mixed in with the 3 outs.
Anyone with info on why Gerling was limited to only 69 pitches?

Not only has his bat disappeared, but the number of passed balls and stolen bases he has given up is dreadful. It's like he has regressed this year.

Troy definitely has some confidence issues - if he can get his swing back, DH is there but I seriously think that he's not in the catching rotation any longer,

When Ober started the year on fire, I bet everyone on this board just sort of expected it. It felt right. Then it was back the way it was last year and the year before....begging for offense. I'm not ready to give up on these guys yet, but I am disappointed.

The Gerling start against USC was the deepest start of the season for a Dog starter even with the other starters having good outings. Will the Huskies start extending now that the season is fairly deep?

Claunch may get passed up by Logan. Claunch should be one of the better hitters in this group, but yea, feels like he's regressed.....the defense is most alarming
Ober is kind of an enigma to me....he's not really standout at anything and then he'll have a game where he crushes a couple balls and that keeps him hanging around the lineup. At this point, Id prefer to have Melton and Forester on that side of the infield.
Jones has exceeded my expectations at the plate. As we move deeper into conference play, it'll be interesting to see how he does.....sure is nice to get him on base

But this year, against weaker teams, the “best” hitters on the club can’t buy a hit. We all know they have the potential to be tremendous hitters. Why aren’t they reaching it? I like Ober defensively, because of how versatile he is. He can play pretty much anywhere. Although, having said that, there are better defensive choices everywhere. Offensively (and defensively, really), he needs to be better at something. He is not exceptionally fast, and he is not exceptionally strong. What he is is a crazy pull ball hitter. His two hits in the Santa Clara series were both ground balls to the left side. His first at bat in the second game was a hard hit ball right up the middle that would be a base hit for pretty much any other player, but Santa Clara had the shift on and the second baseman was able to get to it and make the play to first. Where he really struggles is in the first games of series. He has two hits on the season in the first game of each series. One was a home run (to left, naturally) after they pulled Wicks and the other is when he randomly went opposite field and beat the shift against BYU. Otherwise, he is 0-17 in first games. He is hitting .286 in the second, third and fourth games and midweek. Because he is struggling in first games, I wonder, if he has 20/20 vision. Sometimes, the night games get to hitters, who do not have good vision. Ober is like the decathlete of the team. He is good at a lot of different things but not really great at anything. I think that he can be a great piece to a great Oregon State season, but I do not believe that Mitchy Slick has found the exact right way to use Ober yet.

If he can keep his bat active, he is a threat on the bases and a threat in the outfield. And he can lay down a nice bunt. Glad to see him maturing into a top player on the team.

For a 50 yard dash: Kyler Micah Mcdowell Preston Jones Andy Peterson John Peterson For a 30 yard: John Peterson AndyP MicahM PReston Kyler Notes: Preston easily the fastest before 3 years of bad hamstrings. Looking fast now so I hedge my bet. MicahM definitely would be neck-and-neck with Preston, but hammy. John Peterson is there because he said he was quicker than AndyP, but I think he gained speed running from cops with a beer in his hand. My bets. All 1 dollar bets.
