Central Arizona C.C. is a national power in the JuCo ranks and their 2021 season start would certainly support that. The Vaqueros from Coolidge, Arizona have won their first 18 games of this season and are ranked #1 in the NJCAA national poll. It is a team littered with numerous Division ! recruits and MLB Draft prospects.
Their RH closer is D.J. Carpenter, a 6'6" flame thrower from M.L. King HS in Riverside, CA. Carpenter's long frame and lively fastball attracted MLB scouts to King's games which led to his eventual draft selection by the Phillies in the 18th round of the 2018 draft. He chose to attend ACCC instead of entering the professional ranks.
Carpenter camps on 95 mph and will take it up to 97 when needed. This year, the Vaqueros are scoring at a clip that the "mop-up" men are finishing games with no need to close games that were decided by the 6th inning. In 2021, Carpenter has made 4 appearances, each consisting of 1 inning of work. He has allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 3 walks and 7 K's. He's 0-0 with an ERA of 2.25
By compaarison, his JC pitching role and pitching tools are somewhat similar to Bryant Salgado.
