"You must immediately establish your fastball on the inner half of the plate". The hitter must be made aware that you will pitch inside. Dorman teaches that. After 4 games in Surprise, OSU pitchers: Issued 9 BB to the opponents. Hit 9 opposing batters. And yea, I say unto thee . . . . it was established. I love the mentality! And I think our pitching staff exceeded expectations, which were already fairly lofty.....good job Coach Doorman

Dallas Buck and Mike Stutes thrived on that approach, letting the hitter know you controlled the inner half of the plate. Nobody dug in against them. They had good control but we "comfortably wild." I think Dallas had 20+ HBP one of his two years as a starter.

That seemed like a crazy stat.. so I checked with the supercomputer. Buck's Soph year 2005 - 12-1 record, 2.09 ERA, 129IP, 118K, 51 BB, 32 HBP, 30 ER. Not sure I've seen anyone with more hit batters than earned runs allowed. Interesting thing is his freshman year, 69 IP, 0 hit batters. So it sure looks like they told him to take his half of the plate between freshman and sophomore year!
