Only Arizona escaped opening day unscathed. The Wildcats sent their Southern Nevada JC Transfer star, Chase Silseth out to open their season and he delivered a 5 2/3 inning, 3-hit performance that triggered a 3-0 win over Ball State. Silseth reached 97-98 mph and struck out 7 with 2 walks.
UCLA was roughed up by the University of San Francisco, 6-2 at home. With Pettway nursing a sore arm, the Bruins started Jared Karros to oppose USF ace, Landon Bourassa. The Dons pounced early, and used Bourassa and their bullpen to hold the lead and finish the game.
ASU led Sacramento State 2-0 heading to the bottom of the 9th. Sac State loaded the bases and then poled a grand slam to win 4-2. That ruined dinner for the Solar Demons.
Nationally, number 1 Florida went down in 13 innings to Miami, 10-9. Florida beat Miami on Friday, 7-5.
Jordan Wicks was getting national attention for his "unhittable" performance against OSU. It didn't surprise anyone, he beats Texas, TCU and Oklahoma as well. Kevin also got kudos for his performance. Two notes I saw on Kevin, "his command wasn't sharp" and "his velo dropped off - was registering consistent 92 through first 2+ innings but tailed off to 89-90 in the 4th and 5th.

I remember watching Bourassa play for the Knights several summers ago. He is a quality arm, I think he was the WCL Pitcher of the Year.
Kai Murphy hit a homer for ASU yesterday. He didn't appear to have much pop last year.
Jake Harvey had a big day for CSU Fullerton too.

CS-Fullerton is deligted with Jake. He's prospering and I like that. An inconvenient truth. the Beaver program has numbers - PT is hard to come by.
Drew Gilbert (5-10, 165) the Minnesota POY and Will Frisch's pitching partner at Stillwater HS is on a roll. Gilbert was committed to OSU for a long time and convinced his friend Frisch to flip from TCU to OSU, then flipped himself to Tennessee late in the cycle during the coaching change here. Gilbert was a dominant pitcher in high school but was converted to CF at Tennessee. He had an exceptional freshman year at Rocky Top in the shortened 2020 season and this week has gone 5-8 and left the yard twice.

It is really a shame that OSU won't allow these kids to be 2 way guys. Murphy and Gilbert both would still be Beavs if allowed it. Many kids are told we will give you an opportunity to prove you can do it but it's a lie just to get them here and then they make them pitcher only kids. Walling left and was also promised same thing. Washburn was also told he would get to hit. Both of those guys had tremendous power potential and that could be used for us. Not to mention the afformentioned Murphy and Gilbert who obviously have some pop

Were the Vols lying?

I know he pitched and played outfield in last year's shortened season and was up to 95 on mound. Not sure why they would now say he won't pitch unless there is an arm injury not made public? I'd think if you have a lefty that can run it up there you'd throw him, But it is possible I guess.

Well the two ranked teams in the PAC-12 didn’t fare well UCLA loses their rubber match 3-8 against the Dons.... Arizona also loses 2-5 against Ball State. Hoping the Beavs continue to build on their last couple of games

Hoping the Beavs continue to build on their last couple of games Arizona can salvage a split tomorrow, and if Ball State makes a run in the MAC (they were picked third in the preseason poll), it won't look so bad. But San Francisco is a black eye for UCLA.

So far, I'm impressed. Although, our hitting is always better early on against teams with lesser pitching.....Pac 12 pitching always tightens things up. But this is exactly what everyone has wondered......can the Beavs put up runs? And if they can, they have the arms, and the defense.
I like how Canham is getting guys in.....I like that he let Pfennings try to pitch out of trouble.....I like the small ball.

If I recall correctly, RPI is going to be less of a metric for post season.....didn't I hear that? I think I did.

Beavers are making good strides as well.....I couldn't help myself, I had to take a peek after their showing this week even though it's way too early to be doing that.
