So. Looks like everyone signed as expected. No surprises either way . Then, through last night , we seem to have brought in a 'good' cross section of Preferred Walk Ons . The 'recruiting services' say that our class is underwhelming - but , in addition to star ratings , class size plays a huge role, and we did not have many schollies open - thus a small class ! I like what the coaches can do with the guys we recruit - they improve from Day 1 forward. That, as opposed to the water chicken, that recruit highly 'rated' athletes , but then they go straight downhill on the field !

They are not on Scholly for the first year. Second year 'possible' , if the coaches see what they want. We also still have openings and needs based on transfer portal impact on current players , or players wanting to move to OSU ! To me, it's a lot like being able to have a first hand look at guys where you have a mutual interest !

I think the 3 additional transfers were were expecting are all official now
Deshaun Fenwick RB from S. Carolina Elijah Jones CB from Kansas Henry Bloomfield OL from Utah State
Twitter rumors of a signing today from JC lineman Jason White (have seen him listed as OT and DE). Originally verballed to Boise State. Also offered by Arizona, ASU, K-State and Florida.

Don't forget 4-Star transfer Makiya Tongue who was rated the #9 Athlete in the country his senior year.
Our class is getting penalized heavily due to small numbers. If you look at our "player average" numbers per individual we would rank just behind Stanford and ahead of Washington State for 9th in the Pac-12. Which sounds about right.
In terms of "ratings" WR Tongue, RB Collins, LB Mascarenas and RB Fenwick would be the class headliners.
The transfer portal has been very kind to the Beavers and this year appears to be no exception. We currently have no less than 5 players from the portal in our two deep including Gebbia, Eldridge and Roberts.
I feel good about this small class and trust Coach Smith and staff have a clear understanding about the type of player who fits their scheme and culture.

National Signing Day not as big of a deal as it used be. There is an earlier signing day in December that seems to be a "bigger deal" now.
It's always good to worry about recruiting.
Transfers are a huge deals these days, both coming and going.

I am concerned about our recruiting. Walk on players may or may not pan out. Very true. Oregon kids getting a shot though....I like it. Some of these kids have family ties to OSU already. Those kinds of kids will be invested, and have something to prove. I think it's good for the program in the long run. If you build good relationships with local high schools, you may get future kids with "options" instead of them going to the dark side down I5.

Jason White is quite the prospect just from reading the earlier news releases by Orange Lutheran and Boise State. We will see, but OT is obviously always a key position. Exciting news.

There is no downside to the walkons.
Positives: -Depth -Relationships with schools and coaches. -Ties to in state schools. This is very important. You develop this strongly by having a strong instate walkon program. - Practice depth is difficult without healthy amount of walkons.
Negatives: -None. -Have heard that celebrating walkons could scare scholarship recruits. This makes no sense as teams are capped at 105 players in season and no limit offseason. Because of this all rosters are roughly the same size. Competition numbers are the same. The walkon numbers are not affected by featuring said walkons.
Thus featuring and having a strong walkon program is only a boon.
I calculate that we have 6 scholarship spots available. This is the most accurate number you will find. Most of those will probably be filled by transfers. Some of those will probably be filled by walkons who have earned it.

I am concerned about our recruiting. Walk on players may or may not pan out. Why? we are very transfer heavy, and have very few schollies to give. Any big name we would otherwise promote are transfers for the most part. This is just a weird year because so many otherwise ineligible to return players are coming back.

Any big name we would otherwise promote are transfers for the most part. This is just a weird year because so many otherwise ineligible to return players are coming back. We will have plenty of scholarships to offer if we find a player who upgrades our roster. We have lost 13 players since November who could have returned in 2021. That number could reach 20 by August. There will be more defections guaranteed. We are still looking before August in the portal to upgrade this roster. More players will be added to the portal after spring drills.

I am concerned about our recruiting. Walk on players may or may not pan out. As Beaver Fans when have we not been concerned about recruiting? For the COVID times we are living in, this staff is doing great in my opinion. It isn't just about the walk on players... we are grabbing the right transfers who are legit D1 talent and mixing in the some H.S. recruits for long term depth. We are improving from where we have been. We would all like to be in the top 3 of the conference but that is going to take several years to climb that mountain post covid. Keep the hope alive... we are the school that finds the gems in the rough. I agree we need to replace some talented guys that are no longer on the roster. I'm more interested to see if the QB's we have on the roster can lead us to a bowl game. That is the next step.
