I remember Coach Riley gave Heyward his start in coaching as a GA at Oregon State which propelled him into a good career. I believe Keith was selling cars before that GA stint ( I could be wrong). Riley had recruited him as a player and then began his coaching career. It bothered me when Heyward left OSU years later to go to UW for a pay raise. I wonder if we were given the chance to match. Hayward known as an absolute top level recruiter. Yes, Heyward was selling Toyotas in Gladstone before Riley hired him on as a GA. To answer your rhetorical question. No, BDC did not increase the budget to keep Heyward on. This is a great example of BDC hamstringing the football program at the expense of the other programs. Fun fact. One of the first recruits Keith Heyward recruited to Seattle in 2012? #1 Safety in the country, Shaq Thompson. The next year, he recruited Travell Dixon to Washington. Two years later, after moving on to USC, he recruited JuJu Smith-Schuster. Heyward has been referred to as an "ace recruiter."

If my rememory is right, I seem to recall Heyward took an OSU recruit with him when he took the job at Washington. Anyone else remember this? A few years later, on a cold night in Reser, Washington was drubbing the Beavs, and driving for another score, when Kieth seemed intent to rile up the OSU fans by wildly waving a towel, reving up the Huskie bench, and genuinely taunting the OSU fans seated down low behind the UW bench. What an Ass.

It would suck to have to wear duck gear to have a job. Amen..... I'm betting he didn't want to look like a human highlighter anymore

What an Ass. Recruits that went with Keith Heyward to Washington: Cleveland Wallace III was the lone Keith Heyward recruit, who followed Heyward to Washington. He played in nine games for the Huskies in 2013. When Heyward left Washington for USC, Wallace transferred to San Jose State, where he was All-Mountain West. After two seasons in San Jose, Wallace declared for the NFL Draft. He did poorly in the combine. He was signed by the Texans and then claimed off waivers by the 49ers. He never saw the field in a regular season game. He subsequently played a year in the CFL. Fallout: After Heyward was signed by Washington, Kentrell Brice decommitted from Oregon State and committed with Louisiana Tech. Brice did not redshirt and played all four years for Louisiana Tech, where he was All-Conference USA. Brice had a great pro day and was signed by the Packers. He was the backup Free Safety and Nickelback for the Packers, playing all season into the NFC Championship Game. He was hurt in his second season and finished the year on the IR. Brice was the Packers' starting safety in 2018. He became an unrestricted free agent and was signed and was cut by the Buccaneers. He was drafted by the XFL's Seattle Dragons but was released. The Bears signed him in 2020 but cut him in July. The Cardinals signed him, but he was hurt his leg before the seasons started and missed the season. Devian Shelton decommitted from Oregon State and signed instead with USC. Shelton only played in one game as a redshirt freshman, where he suffered a career-ending injury. I am confused as to how it happened, but I know that Heyward was recruiting either Steffon Martin or Chris Young (maybe both?). They both decommitted from Oregon State and signed with Arizona State instead. Martin was a two-year starter. Young was Second Team All-Pac-12. He played for the Jets and Texans in 2014 and was signed by the Saints in 2015. I know that Heyward was recruiting a wide receiver, but I am unclear if it was one of the players that signed with Oregon State or not. If not, it was Kenny Lawler, Lawler flipped from Oregon State and signed with California. Lawler redshirted in 2012 and played for California for three years before declaring for the draft. He was drafted in the seventh round, pick 243. He played two seasons with the Seahawks. In 2018, he signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In his second season, he was Winnipeg's best wide receiver, leading the Blue Bombers to their first Grey Cup Championship in 29 years. In total, at least four or five recruits jumped ship. And recruiting fell off thereafter. And I think that it was all over some paltry amount like $19,000.00 a year, something on that order of magnitude. Oregon State was on the cusp of a truly historic recruiting class, and it all fell apart at the end. And a big reason why is that the Beavers' best recruiter disappeared over night over $19,000.00 a year. BDC put the football program into a hole that we are still digging out of.

Do we know if it was all about the money though? Could he have also left for resume enhancement? Adding Washington to your coaching resume is probably worth more than just the $19,000 a year for a young up and coming coach.

It was not about the money; there were more than ample funds and had Riley wished to match UW's offer he was free to do so. There was considerable concern about Heyward's recruiting tactics. Sark, Taggart and Cristobal, his subsequent employers, had no concerns whatsoever.

Doesn’t sound like his recruits were that much different than other recruiters that were considered just “good” in the big pic anyway.

I was going purely off your post. When he was at OSU. Other schools may have had different “philosophies” on recruiting, shall we say.

I was going purely off your post. When he was at OSU. Other schools may have had different “philosophies” on recruiting, shall we say. I see Ryan Murphy on KHJ's list. It was nice to have a future Super Bowl Champion on the roster for five years. 2012 was set to be his big class. It was loaded with multiple four-star recruits. Once KHJ left, the class emptied out. The only two recruits, who I know that KHJ recruited who stuck around were Chris Miller and Cyril Noland-Lewis. Miller was dismissed from the team after a fight. CNL redshirted in 2012. He played at coverage linebacker in 2013, playing in all 13 games. He was a dime back in 2014 and reserve safety. He started at strong safety in 2015 before being demoted to nickelback. He transferred in 2016 to Louisiana Tech. He was not drafted, but he signed with the Cardinals for part of 2017 before disappearing into the ether. KHJ was just ramping up, when he was here. It would have been nice to see what his ceiling was. As far as recruiting, I have never heard anything bad about KHJ's recruiting. I know that he definitely worked with some scumbag recruiters, and there are a lot of guilt by association arguments flying around. However, I have never heard that KHJ himself did anything wrong.
