Oregon State has a commitment from Hustyn Wheeler, a 15 year old freshman outfielder at Sandra Day O'Connor HS in Phoenix, AZ. Wheeler is 5-11 and 171 with a med-lg frame and long limbs. Projects to grow and fill out during his HS years. Has a very athletic makeup and his actions on the diamond reflect a smooth and well coordinated athlete. Has excelled playing for the Scottsdale Dirtbags travel team during the summer and fall age group tournaments. Bats and throws left.
Defensively, he shows quick feet and clean footwork in the outfield. Has a noticably fast first step and jump on on the ball. Makes a quick transfer and has measured an OF velo of 82 mph. Accurate throws to the bases with some tail at the end. Has soft hands and makes playing CF look easy. He's fast - has run a lazer timed 60 in 7.13
Offensively, hits from a balanced stance with a high leg kick, and a quick and compact stroke. Consistent contact and hits the ball hard (Exit velo of 92 mph). Has good feel for the barrel. Flashes of exceptional eye-hand coordination. Has a level stroke and a natural pull hitter that has good pull side power developing (325').
With the Dirtbags, he has alo played some at 1B and is being developed as some LHP help.
