Whether you were a fan or not, he was an inescapable presence on radio and TV in the 80’s and 90’s.
Wasn’t he also step-father to one of OSU’s past QB signees?

The odds of that are in his favor...

The odds of that are in his favor... Right. Wasn’t he married a ridiculous number of times? King was once married to Danny Southwick’s mother. I think Southwick was on the roster at least one year, but never took a snap.

I think Southwick was on the roster at least one year, but never took a snap. Danny Southwick. Talk about bouncing around. He originally signed with BYU but signed with Oregon State after returning from his mission. He then transferred to Dixie State before transferring to Utah and back to Dixie State. After his fifth and final transfer, he played his senior year at Occidental. I believe that Southwick was on the roster in 2003 and transferred to Dixie State prior to the 2004 season. Southwick played a year for the Louisville Fire before the AFL II folded, because of the Great Recession. He then played a year for the Raiders. After being out of football for a year, he wound up playing for the Tampa Bay Storm in the AFL III. He played for the San Jose Sabercats in 2012. He played for three different AFL teams in 2013. He was the starter for the Portland Thunder in 2014, playing in eight games and finishing 166/265 for 2,086 yards, 39 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. The Thunder released him, and he was picked up by the Spokane Shock. After five weeks, he was traded to the Los Angeles KISS. He finished 212/370 for 2,632 yards, 49 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, which was his highwater mark. He played for the Thunder/Steel, the KISS and finished up the season playing for the Orlando Predators. He played an entire season with the Cleveland Gladiators in the NAL in 2017, throwing a single pass. He was a backup on three different teams in 2018, not notching a single statistic. He played with the Columbus Destroyers in 2019 before the AFL III folded. Southwick was on the Jersey Flight roster in 2020, but the season was cancelled because of the pandemic. It is weird to think that he could still be playing football more than 16 years after transferring out.

Matt Bryant was here for spring practice in 1995. However, he was not guaranteed the starting job, even though he clearly outkicked Randy Lund, and he transferred to Baylor, sat out the 1995 season, and then kicked for Baylor in 96 and 97. He kicked against us in 1996 in our game at Baylor.
He was still in the NFL in 2019, almost 25 years later. I'd say Pettibone missed the boat on that one.

King was right about one thing. He said you got the best answers from concise and short questions.

Randy Lund was so bad that the immortal Doug Stuckey (the punter, if you don't remember) replaced him as PK less than halfway through the 1996 season, and Jose Cortez replaced Lund for Lund's senior season. Bryant was a Pro Bowler and played in a Super Bowl. I would concur that Pettibone really put us in a hole with that decision. Of course, if Bryant stayed at Oregon State, he might never have had the opportunity, so good for him on avoiding having Pettibone ruin his career.

Doug Stuckey was 15-for-15 on PATs and 3-4 on FGs after replacing Lund. Should have been the kicker all along. He got an MBA from Northwestern, no small feat, has done very well for himself in marketing and communications in Southern California. He was a very good guy.

I think Doug and my cousin were in the same frat. My cousin was always really high on Doug.
