In 2020 they were #2 and #3 in charity donations in the United States. They donated over $900 million to the Knight foundation and $300 million to the University of Oregon. And no, it all doesn't go to athletics. That's 1.2 BILLION folks.

And then the Knight Foundation figures out how to covertly channel a large chunk of that 900 million to "you know where".

The money gets spent later, but $500 million is supposed to go to the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. In 2015, the Knights raised $1 billion (half from the Knights themselves) for OHSU cancer research. The Knights do great things with their money mixed in with some terrible things. I would say, though that the $900 million gift is all in Nike stock. I would hazard to guess that he is donating Nike stock with a low cost basis. He gets to offload that stock and take a deduction on other income for the full $900 million and he can stretch it across multiple years. Smart. And it helps. But he is getting something out of it, too. Plus, he gets to decide where the money goes.

I know Phil Knight isn't a fan favorite for beaver fans because of his connection to the UO,but his donation to OHSU allowed my dad to go through treatment at OHSU and bought our family a year of time with him after being diagnosed with Leukemia. Some things are more important than sports...
