Gavin is a skilled player that has an extra dimension - he can play SS, CF or Pitch and probably anywhere else you might need him to play. A lean, but strong build at 6-2 and 170, he brings some elite athleticism to OSU's class of 2022. He's in his junior year of high school and attending a new school. He played his first two years of high school ball at Wasatch HS in Midway, Utah where he was ranked #1 in his class by Perfect Game and Prep Baseball Report.
This fall he is attending Hamilton HS in Chandler, Arizona and again, is the #1 player in his class in the Arizona state rankings. Gavin is a seasoned summer ball Warrior having played in some of the nation's biggest and most competitive championship events. He never fails to stand out. Professional scouts are acquainted with his game and he was a household word with college coaches.
What is it exactly that Gavin does so well? Observers say he plays with a love for the game, he plays with enthusiasm and he hustles. In 2019, he ran a 6.71 60 yard dash, so he's fast (a requisite for playing CF, they tell me). He's an excellent baserunner. Defensively, he has a shortstops glove with range. His OF velo is now at 90 mph.
You haven't discussed Gavin until you talk about his bat. In early 2019, BLAST measured his exit velo at 103 mph off a wood bat. That is a quick bat! This past summer while participating in Perfect Game's underclass All American games, his bat barrel speed was measured at 85.44 which was the second fastest time of 2020 among the 100's of players measured by PG at their tournament and Showcase events. 83.90 is considered "elite barrel speed" at the Division I level. His Maximum acceleration speed was measured at 55.53 with 49.90 considered elite at the D-1 College level. His Impact momentum was 32.50 which fell midway between "plus" and "elite" at the D-1 level. In his 17u age group, he ranked in the top-3 nationally.
Gavin has power and projects more power in the future. His metrics are off the charts for a high school hitter who has a career BA of over .400. Makeup, speed, defense and a "Thunderstick" . . . . . I can't wait.
