Since we seem to be getting some OSU WBB after all here are my thoughts on the team.
1- Goodman is the crux of the team. If she can handle being the leader and PG then the team will be very good. If she can’t then the team is in trouble.
Last year the team won 2 and lost 7 in close games (10 or less points). In the past 4 years they averaged 11-3. Somehow a team led by Mik and Destiny wasn’t able to win the close ones. Not something I would have guessed before the season. For some reason they passed off the leadership to Maddie and that just didn’t work out. Goodman has a minor in Leadership so let’s hope she can do it this coming season.
In the past Goodman hasn’t done well with the spotlight on her. The spotlight will be very bright and very centered on her this year. Let’s hope she’s ready for it.
Each year Goodman has gotten significantly better each year. If she can play up to her statistics/capabilities she will be one of the best in the country and the Beav’s will be a very good team indeed.
Backups for Goodman are Noelle and Faustino. Noelle is good for a breather and I have no idea what Faustino is going to provide.
2- Jaz is the starting SG at the beginning of the season, can she keep it?
SR gives his veterans the opportunity to show what they can do so I see Jaz getting that chance. She took a while to get the defense down, but by the end of the 2nd season she was good at the Beav’s system. Jaz’s rebounding is very solid. Her shooting did not progress last season, but an off-season operation on her hand would explain her difficulties there. Jaz significantly improved her 3-pt. shooting in her 1st season so I think it reasonable that this will be a better season. The only problem I see with Jaz is that when pressed hard she tends not to make good passing decisions. On the other hand, she has speed that the Beav’s haven’t had since Kalmer left. If she can harness that toward some driving, she is the only established player the Beav’s have with that capability, and Jaz would fulfill a real need for the team.
If Jaz has problems then it’s up the Sasha or Savannah to fill in and I haven’t seen either in a college game so I don’t really know how either will work out. My guess from watching HS video is that Sasha is more defensive oriented while Savannah brings a fluidity to her game that will catch people by surprise.
3- Mack is only newbie I see starting at the beginning of the season.
Mack’s shooting, rebounding, passing and general BB IQ seems very good. Three people on the team have mentioned that she is “good at everything”. The only problem I can foresee is maybe her defense due to her lack in quickness. But SR’s defense doesn’t require that, just smarts and grit. And I think she’s got both.
I see Sasha as her back up, no idea how that will work out.
4- Taya is back, YEAH!
Taya’s rebounding, passing, defense, and play in the important games are all outstanding. The only worries are, can she come back and play well after the injury, and can she get her shooting % up to at least her freshman numbers. I think her Soph. season shooting problems were a function of her shoulder surgery in the off season. So, the expectation is her shooting will be fine.
Taya’s transfer back up Subasic seems to be a very solid player and should be a great help while Taya gets herself in shape.
5- Ms. Jones, is she the real deal?
Jones had a really good Frosh year, but the breadth of her skills was on the level of a really really good High School post. She can rebound, play interior defense, and score one on one. When she was double teamed, she either fouled and/or turned over the ball. She didn’t pass except in extreme emergencies and then it didn’t go well. From what she says the coaches are having her work on a mid-range shot, and passing out for a 3-point shot which will solve this problem. If Jones can get her fouls down, I think we have a dominant center. The good thing is that the coaches have a great record of developing posts and Jones seems to be a very hard worker so I foresee good progress.
Mitrovic is the back up now that Trish is gone. Mit spent all of last season rehabbing an injury so I think we will be missing Trish as Mit figures it all out. But SR is very positive about her so I hope she can quickly give Jones some rest time.
This year the Beav’s are a real head scratcher. They lost four starters from the end of last year but have a legit three starters back in Jones, Taya, and Aleah. Can they get it together and be a good team? If Aleah, with Taya’s support, can emerge as a leader and keep herself in the game mentally and physically I think the Beav’s are going to be a great team. They need to make up for a lot of lost scoring from last year and who is going to make that up I don’t know. My wild card hope is Jaz cranking up the scoring. Sasha seems to be the real deal so far in practice so if Jaz or Mack don't work out I think Sasha will be good as the backup starter. Go Beav’s!!!!
