In 70 years I have never broke a bone, ridden in an ambulance or been in an ER. Today I hit the trifecta. while climbing a ladder with my blower in hand and had the bottom of the ladder slide out from underneath me. Of course this happened just as I was getting ready to step on the roof. It felt like a trap door had been opened below me. I landed on my daughter's large plastic planter. The result was a trip to the ER in an ambulance. Final assessment severely bruised shoulder, 5 broken ribs. And yes I am in pain right now. I know several of you have had this type of injury. My question is how long does the healing process take, 6 weeks, 12 weeks or 20 weeks. Thanks so much for your information as it hurts to cough and laugh right now.

I thought this post was going to be about a player that broke his ribs in the last game, but nope. Sounds brutal. I’ve never broke any ribs so can’t answer you. Get well soon!

WOW< how many times have YOU BEEN TOLD TO NOT DO THAT? I hear it all the time from my wife. Hope you're doing ok. I broke a rib playing football in JC and had to wear a girdle type thing the rest of the season, it was sore for about 3 months as I recall, but it's been a "few" years ago, playing didn't help any I'm sure. You got a bunch of healing to do, hopefully a few Beav wins will help it along.. Take care, and stay off ladders!! My in-law's neighbor fell off a 6 foot step ladder in his garage, and broke his neck. He survived, many surgeries, blood clots, and neck braces, but was never the same and had severe pain issues and passed not long after. Be careful out there...

Damn it, don’t you watch those leafguard commercials. I’d give it 6-8 you’ll be good as new. 3 weeks for the pain from laughing and coughing. Good luck

Well, I fell into a crawlspace when I was 47 years old, so this may or may not relate. I had many bumps, bruises and cuts. The worst thing was 5 broken ribs. One of the ribs was broken in two places and one was only cracked. Man it hurt, but they gave me a bunch of goofy drugs to get through the worst part of the pain. I slept in a chair for 22 days, could not lie down. My body would not allow me to sneeze, cough or burp. I did fart a few times, but Hey what ya gonna do? Quite a bit of pain and was totally out of work for about 3 or 4 weeks. I think it was about 6 weeks before I really felt better and maybe 8 to 10 before I could really say I was recovered. Like I said I was 47 at the time and at my age now, I am not sure how it would be, "if I would even survive"...

Keep a pillow with you when possible to grip around your chest when you cough/laugh. I’m sure everyone is different regarding recovery time. Good luck. By the way, you need to cough occasionally even though it’s a killer to avoid lung problems. Hang in there.

You know those self-propelled vacuum cleaners? Someone needs to invent a blower version for roofs. There's my million dollar idea - take it run with it, royalty-free.

Damn, that sucks. Eight to 12 weeks is what my wife is forecasting. She knows about these things being a PT. Hopefully it's a smooth and speedier recover in your case.

When I was 38, I fell off my roof and broke six ribs and had a partially collapsed lung. There was no flying for a couple of months. My youngest son was about 8-weeks old and I think I could not hold him for at least a month. I had deadlines at work and only managed because of a lot of codeine. Sitting was horrible for a couple of weeks. Four-months later I was able to hit balls for my other son's infield practice but it hurt. I don't think I could of hit them well enough if he was 10 or 11. All the ribs were broken on my right side and I remember trying to throw left handed because it hurt too much right handed. A year-and-a-half later I got a series of massages from a sports medicine type therapist. They concentrated on breaking up the scar tissue in and around the intercostal muscles. It was painful! I'd go as long as I could stand it and then tell them to stop. I had about ten of those sessions. But after them, I was finally pain free. I do remember the night after and I was watching a mockumentary called I think "Best of Show." Very funny but I could not have laughed to save my life.

Thanks guys for your reply. After posting my doctor called and wants to see me next Wednesday. Also said 6 weeks things will be better if I do what I am suppose to do and 12 weeks to be close to new. My wife has already informed me I will do what the doctor says or I will answer to her. LOL I have a sweetie for a wife so have found its best to say yes maam and no maam. The grand kids were over last night, they are still young so any hugs had to be half hugs on my good side. This morning there is some slight swelling around the broken ribs. My wife helped me get dressed. I told her I felt like a 3 year old, she laughed and promised we get through this just fine.

For me it was at least 6 weeks. As others have said avoid laughing, sneezing, coughing etc. if you possibly can. Broken ribs hurt like hell!

Yep. 6 weeks for me and that was in my late 20's. Side note: That's also the last time I took a charge in a basketball game. Dumb.
My buddy recently cracked a rib and he's probably closer to 8 weeks now and just now getting to feeling better.

I do think your age is going to be a factor relative to everyone else's experience. I've broken ribs... several times. The healing times were different every time based on the severity of the injury, but also where on the actual rib the fracture was. The one that hurt the most was two fractured ribs where the fracture was close to the spine, but the pain was delayed a bit. I took a few weeks off from sports and was back at it. The one that hurt the most when it actually happened was betting a rib broken by a hook to the body but that's probably because it was right over the liver. The one that took the longest to heal was the last one, which was from a dirt bike crash about 4 years ago. I couldn't lay down, had to sleep in a recliner. It hurt to cough for like 3 months, but the worst of it was over after maybe a week or two, where I wasn't in constant pain. I stayed off the meds during the day but couldn't sleep without them. Take care of yourself and listen to your wife! DO YOUR BREATHING EXERCISES RELIGIOUSLY. Pneumonia is no joke for any of us, but at 70 it's very serious. I know the docs told you this. I am fortunate enough to be married to a nurse, who both disapproves of my reckless activities and yet still doesn't rub it in that she was right while caring for me when said reckless activities go wrong. Glad to hear you have a good one as well.

I thought I broke a rib in early July with a nasty fall water skiing but they couldn't find anything. They thought perhaps I bruised my chest cavity which is the same diagnosis I got 20 years ago after a similar accident and symptoms.
Extremely sore for at least three weeks with coughing and sneezing resulting in excruciating pain. I think I managed to water ski again in about 4-5 weeks but I had a helluva time bending over to put my ski boot on. Gradually got better but it STILL is somewhat uncomfortable and I can still feel it when I sneeze or cough 4 months later. I'm 63 which may have something to do with it.
Be patient and good luck for a speedy recovery.
