If Paige is half as good as everyone seems to think she is, why in the world would she stay at UConn for 5 years instead of 4, and then get started on her pro career? I was merely using that scenario because it was easy to look up on hoopgurlz. The point is things like that are going to factor into many a high school player's decision making process over the next few years. Bueckers might be planning on going pro after 4 years, but the girls who are high school juniors this year don't know that. With respect to Aleah, she graduated in June, so would be enrolled in a Master's program this year. She has plans in education, so completing the Master's is an automatic payday. Personally, I don't see her as a pro. My guess would be she comes back to experience the big crowds one last time. I'm with you on Aleah. I would be shocked if she doesn't return. I could always be wrong, but I think she has the same type of feelings about Oregon State as Mik, who said she would jump at the chance to return, and what better chance could she have to finish her Master's. A lot of things could happen between now and then though.

This is the part that got my attention, not in the previous article: Division I women's basketball teams will be allowed to exceed 15 scholarships

New article about the extra year. This will certainly be interesting for 2021/2022. And a couple years after that.

The article said, "who compete in 2020-21." Does that mean medical redshirts like Kennedy don't get the extra year?

The article said, "who compete in 2020-21." Does that mean medical redshirts like Kennedy don't get the extra year? That is a good question. I was wondering the same thing. How do they define "competes"? Do they mean the person has to play in a certain number of games or a certain number of minutes? Or do they mean the person practiced with the team, but need not have entered a game that counts on the schedule?

I think they made this decision now anticipating a potential cancelation or partial season. They are just going with the idea that it would be easier to just say this season will not count no matter what happens. In the case of someone not playing this season it will make no difference. They are just saying that this season will not count for eligibility, not that everone gets an extra year.

From what I read earlier, it said 'everyone who participates' this year. I took that to mean someone who redshirts would not get any additional year. What it does mean though is that Kennedy could return to play the last half of the year (whenever she was medically cleared) and still have 3 years of eligibility remaining. If that is the case, she could play minutes this season adding depth down the stretch and during the tourney, and still have the same eligibility as she would if she were to redshirt the entire season.
I would still like to know the official wording on this ruling though. It was designed in case this season is shortened or cancelled because of COVID giving the players assurance that if that were to happen, they wouldn't lose that eligibility because of the season being cut short. Kennedy was set to redshirt because of injury, but if the official ruling is open to all who participate, she would have the benefit of playing late in the year, and still have 3 years to play thus saving a redshirt if needed. I think it all depends on the wording of the ruling though. How great would it be for her to add depth during tourney time, and still have her 3 years left in the program!
