Jack Dunn and his friend, Roy Love were baseball beacon lights during their heyday in Portland. Jack coached at Cleveland and then Wilson before suceeding Love at Portland State as I recall. Both were masters of the "inside game" (inside the diamond) as it was called back then - before small ball or little ball became a popular description of the craft). Jack had some excellent teams at Wilson with Dale Murphy, Wayne Titchell, Rich Dodge and others. Dunn competed against Jack Riley (Jefferson) and UO Coach Mel Krause (Franklin) in the PIL. High School ball at it's best when those teams were in the ball yard. Dunn had success year after year coaching Watco Electric in American Legion ball with a team primarily made up of his Wilson players. Both Dunn and Love were outstanding clinicians as well. Men of character that could coach and teach the game in a clinic setting equally well. They left their mark. Watco Electric would make the trip to Roseburg each summer to play Dr. Stewart's. Marion Reneau (?), Watco's owner, supplied the lights at Legion Field before Roseburg hosted the Legion World Series in 1974. Lake Oswego took 2nd behind Puerto Rico in that tournament.

I would confirm both were remarkable men. Jack was cutting edge in his time. Head and shoulders ahead of most. I know we won many games with his brains and not our Bats. Always strong up the middle and endless practice on basic defensives skills. I would guess with all the new Tech available today Jack's teams would have been darn near unbeatable. Many young men owe a lot to those guys. Roy went on to Portland State where for years in was the AD.

Marion's step son played Babe Ruth for me back in the early 80's. He was always around, great guy and supportive family.....
