Scary? Comical? The President damn near died. If a rib hadn't deflected the bullet, it would have been a heart shot. The VP was out of town. Our nation was in crisis and vulnerable. General Haig, the Chief of Staff, stepped up to take charge of response and operations until the return of the VP. Guarantee you, in our time of vulnerability, no foreign power was going to f**k with us when Al Haig was in charge. Like him or not, we should all be grateful he did. In a time of crisis, General Alexander Haig stepped up and served our country well. End of sermon. All of those attributes you list for Haig are true except that he wasn't Reagan's White House Chief of Staff. He was Reagan's Secretary of State. James Baker was Reagan's Chief of Staff. Haig's job was to lead the State Department, not to insert himself into White House administration while the President was hospitalized. But it was a stressful chaotic moment and Haig's command instincts were to step forward when he saw a disorganized situation - so it's understandable.

Yes, you are correct. Al Haig did what a good officer or NCO would do. STAND UP AND FOLLOW ME. Fortunately for our country, there were good people who did just that.

The trouble with poor Al was he quoted the constitution as his basis for "taking charge" Had he read or understood the document, he would have found the Sec. of State was a few more rungs down the ladder. Go Beavs!!
