October 1, 1960 Oregon State 29 - Houston 20 @ Portland, Oregon
Houston was the defending Missouri Valley Champions. It had quit the Missouri Valley the previous year, in order to drop Wichita from its schedule, in an effort bolster its schedule in an effort to try and join either the SEC or the Southwest Conference. (It would join the Southwest Conference in 1976.) Houston had started the year with the Mississippi schools, losing to Ole Miss (who was ranked #1 in the country and would finish undefeated but #2 in the AP Poll behind two-loss Minnesota), but beating Mississippi State in Starkville.
This was Oregon State's final year in the single-wing before scrapping it in 1961 in favor of the T formation. Oregon State was 3-7 the year before and only returned one starter, wingback Art Gilmore. Oregon State beat #6 USC in the Coliseum 14-0 in a "shocking" win. Tommy Prothro coached the entire game in a wheelchair in the booth. Gilmore was hurt in the game. The Beavers were ranked #10, heading to Iowa City. After a terrible first half, including a missed 40-yard field goal, resulted in a 9-0, Oregon State roared back in the second half to pull within 9-6 and 16-12. #19 Iowa scored its final touchdown on an 85-yard touchdown carry, which resulted in the 22-12 Iowa victory. Terry Baker, playing his first year of college football and beginning the season as a key reserve, rather than starter, had been kept out of the end zone by USC and Iowa.
Houston and Oregon State had a home-and-home in 1960 and 1961. This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Houston took the opening kickoff and drove to the Oregon State before fumbling. The Beavers drove 72 yards for a touchdown with fullback, Chuck Marshall, running in from one-yard out. Halfback, Don Kasso, ran the two-point conversion in to put Oregon State up 8-0. Seconds later, the Beavers came up with a second fumble at the Cougar 24. After three plays netted 17 yards, Terry Baker threw his first-ever touchdown pass, a seven-yard touchdown pass to Fred Jones. Baker followed that up by throwing a two-point conversion pass to a 100% Gilmore.
Houston pulled to 16-14 in the third quarter. Marshall broke off a 56-yard touchdown run, but Tim Ankerson missed the extra point, so the lead remained 22-14. Houston scored early in the fourth to pull within 22-20 but could not convert on the two-point pass attempt. Later in the fourth, the Beavers took over on their own 43. Kasso ran around end a couple times for 31 yards to give Oregon State the ball at the Cougar 26. From there, Baker hit Gene Hilliard on a 24-yard pass. Hilliard ran the final two yards for a touchdown with eight-and-a-half minutes left. Ankerson came in and kicked the all-important extra point to all-but put the game out of reach.
Houston would go on to beat Cincinnati, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M in Houston and Florida State in Tallahassee. The Cougars' biggest loss for the rest of 1960 would be a 14-0 loss to Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Tide would finish #9 in the country.
After beating Indiana in Bloomington the following week, Oregon State would be ranked #17. The Beavers would drop a game to the Huskies by a point in Portland and another by eight points to the Bears. The Great Oregon Civil War was for a Liberty Bowl invite against Penn State. The game ended in a 14-14 draw, and the Liberty Bowl invited Oregon with a better record than Oregon State. The Gotham Bowl invited Oregon State, and the Beavers accepted. With Oregon State as the opponent, the Gotham Bowl believed that they could convince 8-2 Syracuse with All-American Ernie Davis to play Oregon State, so it uninvited Holy Cross, who had already accepted an invite. The Orangemen declined the subsequent invite, though. When the Gotham Bowl tried to re-invite Holy Cross, the slighted Crusaders rejected the invitation. No opponent was found for Oregon State for the Gotham Bowl.
Syracuse and Oregon State would play in Portland in the first game of 1961, a Syracuse win. Davis won the Heisman in 1961, and Baker won the Heisman in 1962.
