Through my admittedly orange colored glasses I believe the coaches have the tools to make an excellent team. I'm really excited about this season. There are so many unknowns, I look forward to seeing how these young ladies develop. As long as they stay healthy a deep run in the ncaa tournament is possible.

2016-17 . . . we started ranked #25. Finished at #8.
So if start at #22 this year, then we should finish at #5. Seems reasonable to me.

The real questions in my mind are: What will Jelena bring? Will she provide better backup than Patricia did last season? Is Teresa ready to provide those backup minutes for Aleah, and if not, will Sasha, Savannah, or anyone else be able to provide relief for a few minutes? How much improvement will we see from Jasmine? "What will Jelena bring?" Apparently she is good enough that SR would consider moving her to center and playing Taylor at forward, or vice versa. Considering the following quote, it seems she brings formidability, or formidableness, or formidality, or formidabilitiveness. Something formidable, anyway: "[Jelena] doesn't lack skill that's for sure. ... The 2 of them are dynamic and formidable."I know what coach said about Jelena. I hope he is right. I also remember him saying about Patricia Morris and her talent "people don't know who she is yet, but they will soon". I'm a Patricia Morris fan, but SR's words didn't come true while she was at OSU, and now she will have to show who she is somewhere else. Saying that, the positivity from the coaches this summer have raised my hopes for Jelena to play a role this year.

I'd argue that Rueck's words on PM were completely ambiguous, and they did come true (they would have, no matter the outcome). That is, some took this to mean she's going to make her name well known across the nation, but it's also a way for a coach to tell a player that you are who you choose to become. She ultimately chose to become a transfer, and now we know.

PM would constantly into a crouch on defense in her HS video, neutralizing her 6'7" height advantage, and SR never corrected it. PM lacked ball handling and passing skills, and there is no comparison in their HS videos between PM and JM. I will make another of my outrageously prescient predictions on JM: From Day 1, she will be like Ruth Hamblin on steroids. Ruth could not make a spin move to the basket. Ruth could not put the ball on the floor. Ruth did not have JM's passing skills. Ruth did not have the good hands that JM has or her extra 3 inches. So, though you liked RH as a senior, you'll thnk JM as a redshirt frosh is a step up. You will discover that, when SR included JM under the heading "formidable", he wasn't exaggerating. Heck, I'm willing to stake my illustrious reputation as an evaluator of WBB talent on that.

While JM looks very skilled, her lack of quickness makes Ruth look like an Olympic sprinter. I’m not concerned about JM’s skills, just her ability to get up and down the floor.

Since you are such a great WBB talent evaluator (even though we are talking college), I've believe you much more if you can come close to telling me how many minutes she will play this year, and what will be her rebounding, shot blocking, and scoring averages. Then I will understand what you have in mind when you think SR is not exaggerating.

Interesting find newduke2, thanks, will read their "take" on other teams as well. Noelle sounds very impressive because they fail to mention that at those accomplishments were HS but maybe that's assumed. I do still have hope she will contribute a lot. They aren't sure about Jelena, that's fine, we will sneak her in. They are sure Kennedy is red-shirting, I think there is a good chance she will play late season given the extra year of eligibility. All in all, a fun read, and very civil, says some nice things about OSU WBB !

While, like others, I've been concerned about the impact of Jelena being relatively slow getting down court on our ability to utilize her skills, I'm wondering if it really matters if we have another rim defender (e.g. Taylor, Ellie?, Jovanna?) who can get back on defense fast enough? Such a big playing at the high post (though I wouldn't want to waste Taylor's talents there) would have a bit of a lead getting back on 'D'.

Thinking further about this... and imagining Ellie (who, on film, has demonstrated excellent passing skills) at high post passing down to Jelena and Taylor, with the option of passing to excellent three point shooters or shooting herself... makes me very excited about our offensive potential. This would be a very tough strategy to defend against. There is bound to be someone open.

Two years ago a healthy Taya had the second most minutes on the team. Why you guys think SR is going to bench Taya to put Jelena and Taylor out there is beyond me. It might happen for funsies, but as a strategy?

It might happen for funsies, but as a strategy? Rueck has already said that he wants to experiment with Jelena and Taylor on the floor at the same time. That doesn’t necessarily exclude the other forward being Taya if the experiment turns out to be successful... though I expect that it will be a good competition between Taya and Ellie for that other spot (when the big lineup is the best matchup with the other team).
