The Great Fire of 1845 was remarkably similar to the current fires. It started in Corvallis as a small fire. Grew with some west wind. Exploded when the east winds hit. Burned from Corvallis to the coast. Quickly. Very dry spring followed by a hot, dry summer. The difference being that the 1845 fire was all old growth. The great fires of the 18th century all followed similar patterns with similar weather conditions. I just found the historical context of The Great Fire and the similar fires interesting. cliffhanger76.tripod.com/c2sea/fire/index.html

So with the super bad air quality (worst in the world!) people should tend to stay indoors and not go 'out' unless absolutely necessary....maybe a leg up on getting more ahead of Covid? Two wrongs make a right? I was sitting and drinking beer on top of a little hill a mile or so from Sage's house. Clear. Good air. Wind died. Smoke is as thick around Sage's house as I have ever seen.

For those who are familiar with that stretch of the McKenzie River along HWY 126. The town of Blue River is burnt to the ground, but McKenzie High School which is only 1 mile from the town (across Blue River) is intact. Google Earth View

Really pretty spot on the Earth and some wonderful views while playing a round. I also wondered about Elkhorn, up the little north fork of the Santiam. Cascade Sport Camp?

Cascade Sport Camp? Tokatee survived. No word on Elkhorn or Camp Cascade. Elkhorn really went down the drain the last couple of years. They were barely open the last time I was up there. Elkhorn went downhill AFTER they built the back nine. I HATED that. It was a treat to drive up there, "back in the day" to play on a truly beautiful, and tough course. I always felt bad for the original owner, and the builder of the wonderful front nine. My sons both LOVED Cascades Sports Camp. It was wonderful. That was back in the 90s. Gleason Eakin, and Barry Adams were Lebanon coaches, WAY back when. They've both done some great things. I knew, and roomed with Barry's son, Greg for a time at CCC, before he transferred to OCE (Western Oregon University), back in '76. Greg died, tragically in an automobile accident, not long after he moved. Mr. and Mrs. Adams came to our townhouse to pick up some of Greg's things he hadn't gathered yet, after. It was just heart-wrenching. The pain was evident. I'll never forget it.

I attending Cascade several times in the mid 80’s. Great place.

Any word on Tokatee golf course? Really pretty spot on the Earth and some wonderful views while playing a round. I also wondered about Elkhorn, up the little north fork of the Santiam. Cascade Sport Camp? Tokatee posted some pictures on FB and said all of the buildings were still standing. One of my favorite places to play. 3 days there every July!
