MLB announced the 2021 Draft will be held a month later than in previous years in Atlanta - dates are July 11-13.
A minimum of 20 rounds will be held with the possibility it could be extended as far as 30 rounds. TBD
A plus for the colleges, it won't take place during the CWS week in Omaha.
It would also coincide with the proposed later start to the college season the NCAA is currently considering.
In the MLB new model proposal to MiLB, all short-season and Rookie League A ball would be eliminated and the June start of those leagues would no longer conflict with a July draft date. All Rookie league development would take place within the MLB complexes in Arizona, Florida and the winter leagues in the Dominican Republic.
MLB is also interested in a pre-draft high school showcase tournament featuring the best prospects in the country prior to the draft.
My opinion: That would also allow them to perform physicals and make medical evaluations on the athletes prior to the draft, which is what they really want. Answering medical questions would eliminate one of the missing pieces of most pre-draft scouting data and the one that frightens them the most.
