Lots of comments earlier this month about how if Sturgis could do it, we could do it. Well, it is the proverbial "gift" that now seems like it will keep on giving, and giving, and giving.

www.cnn.com/2020/08/21/us/sturgis-motorcyle-rally-sd-covid-nebraska-trnd/index.html“... one person has been hospitalized.” Of course there will be more, but not nearly as bad as expected at this point based on the sheer magnitude of outlaws there. The rally kicked off Aug. 7 in Sturgis, about 30 miles northwest of Rapid City, and ended on Sunday. The state's Department of Transportation said that the 10-day event attracted more than 460,000 vehicles, down nearly 8 percent from last year's numbers. In 2019, about 500,000 vehicles entered the city with an estimated 490,000 people in attendance, according to the Associated Press. Officials had previously said they thought roughly 250,000 people from around the country would attend the rally this year.

No new deaths were reported. The state’s total deaths due to the disease remained at 161.
Current hospitalizations rose by three to 65.

Whatever the Dakota numbers say, it's not going to reflect that most of the people that visited Sturgis were not residents and took the virus home with them. Since a national contact tracing strategy doesn't seem to exist, we'll probably never really know the full impact.

Lots of comments earlier this month about how if Sturgis could do it, we could do it. Well, it is the proverbial "gift" that now seems like it will keep on giving, and giving, and giving. Harley Davidson - a founding sponsor of the event - kept all of their people home in Milwaukee. Smart decision.

Since a national contact tracing strategy doesn't seem to exist, we'll probably never really know the full impact. True, but the people who live in the local area that worked the event (servers, bartenders, etc) might show a spike in infection rate.

Sturgis attendees departed and have now been tracked to traveling to over 50% of the counties in the U.S. Wow. Up until six months ago I severely underestimated the stupidity of the human race. Link: Super Spreaders

Link: Super SpreadersI’m surprised that you might think that 460,000 vehicles could make it to and from an event without going through 50% of the counties in the U.S. Maybe you’re right.

460,000 vehicles for 365,000 people? Interesting math. At least we can now quantify the number of stupid people.
Rapid City Journal: According to the Department of Transportation, the seven-day total for the rally from Aug. 7 was 365,979 people, which is down just by 7.5% compared to last year at the same time.

Math still doesn't add up. How does the DOT report 460,000 vehicles and 365,000 people? That's a lot of empty vehicles.
