Oregon State Baseball has their first recruit for the class of 2024. Recruiting starts at home and Coach Bailey returns back to his his high school coaching grounds to land this one.
RYAN VANDENBRINK C-3B 5'11" 195 R/R WEST LINN, OR. HS
VandenBrink is from Tualatin but will attend West Linn as a freshman this fall with impressive age-group baseball credentials. He's made All Tournament teams at the 2018 Babe Ruth World Series in Alabama playing for West Linn Federal, Perfect Game West World Series playing with Baseball NW Elite, WWBA 14u West Elite playing for Trosky National Baseball, Perfect Game's MLK West Invitational playing for the Pacific Northwest Freshman.
Some impressive "measurables" as a 7th grader in 2019: Catchers velo (74mph). Catchers pop time (2.12), Exit velo off bat (85 mph)), 60 yard time (7.45). Noted that he recorded a 95 mph exit velo at a tournament with Trosky as an 8th grader.
Video takeaways: Sets up square with a relaxed hitter's posture. Keeps the hands back, squares up and releases the barrel with plus bat speed. Pull hitter in BP video clips. Stout body and strength that projects power.
Defensively, good hands and glove work, blocks with guards and protector, comes out of the chute hard on throws to the bases. Appears sound in the videos. Had difficulty getting my head to accept this was an 8th grader I was watching. Very advanced player and hauntingly, has similar facial features to Rutschman.
High character, 4.0 student.

he's got to avoid the trap a lot of man-boys fall into. Keep working. We had a man-boy in jr high and freshman. As a senior, he had a hard time dealing with the fact that a few of us not only caught him, but passed him.

Unless this boy's parents are very large human beings I'm thinking it's likely this guy will be passed by a current 9th grader that is 5'3, 110 lbs, and runs a 5.6 40.

Got to give the young guys to grow. In HS, I was a pretty good swimmer and in real good shape. I got drafted a little after 18. I was 5-10 or so, 150. A year later at 19, I was 6-0, 200 and in better shape than when I was swimming. Even a year makes a huge difference. Army chow and constant punishing exercise probably didn't hurt.
